The Holler Castle is an Outbound hilltop castle on 340 m above sea level. NN at a foothill of the Hirschberg near the municipality of Kirkel in the Saarpfalz district in Saarland . There is a Roman rock cellar near the castle site, called "Hollerlöcher".
history
The establishment of the Hollerburg probably goes back to the 9th century and was an early medieval "wood-earth system", a round building made of wood. The castle was probably the predecessor of the Kirkel castle, which was possibly founded before 1075, and served as a protective castle for the old road from Metz to Mainz . However, these assumptions have not been archaeologically proven.
The Burgstall (Burgstelle), indicated by a notice board on the Kirkeler Felsenpfad , only gives an idea of the dimensions and impresses with the Hollerkanzel ledge .
Legends tell of mysterious beings who dress in a web of bark and moss and mislead people who dare to venture into the forest here between January 2nd and 3rd .
