Utweiler (in the local dialect Utwiller ) is a district of Gersheim in the Saar- Palatinate district . Until the end of 1973 Utweiler was an independent municipality in the Homburg district .

history

A document dated August 17, 1310 names Udewilre in the rule of Zweibrücken-Bitsch . In 1317 Udewilre belonged to the parish Güderkirch .

With the reign of Bitsch, Utweiler fell to the Duchy of Lorraine in 1604 and to the Kingdom of France in 1766 . Through an exchange of territory in 1781, the village came into the possession of the imperial counts von der Leyen . As a result of the wars triggered by the French Revolution , the Left Bank of the Rhine fell to the French Republic and to the Mairie ( German mayor's office, mayor's office) Brenschelbach in the canton of Medelsheim in the Donnersberg department .

After the Second Peace of Paris , Utweiler came to the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1816 and was part of the "Mayor's Office Medelsheim".

After the First World War , Utweiler was assigned to the Saar area in accordance with the provisions of the Versailles Treaty . In 1935, the Saar area was re-incorporated into the German Empire .

The chapel, consecrated to Brother Konrad , was converted into a church in 1934 and the Utweiler Catholics were released from their ecclesiastical dependence on the French Güderkirch. In 1939 the place belonged to the Red Zone . The residents were evacuated; the abandoned place directly on the border became a theater of war. In 1944 Utweiler was evacuated for the second time.

In March 1945, Utweiler was the first town in what is now Saarland to be captured by the 12th Division of American troops during World War II . Before that, a bitter tank battle developed around the place, as the 17th SS Panzer Grenadier Division "Götz von Berlichingen" had orders to "keep the enemy away from the Reich under all circumstances". Around 600 Germans and Americans were killed in the fighting.

From 1937 to 1950 Utweiler was part of the "Mayor's Office Altheim". After that it belonged as an independent municipality to the "Mayor's Office Medelsheim".

As part of the Saarland regional and administrative reform , the previously independent municipality of Utweiler was assigned to the municipality of Gersheim on January 1, 1974.
