Medelsheim is a district of the municipality of Gersheim in the Saarpfalz district ( Saarland ). Until the end of 1973 Medelsheim was an independent municipality in the Homburg district .

geography

Medelsheim is in the Parr countryside . In the south, the municipal border is the state border with France .

history

Medelsheim has always been the seat of the secular and spiritual administration of the Parr. It was first mentioned as Medelinisheim in 888 in connection with a donation from King Arnulf to the Hornbach monastery . Archaeologically proven traces of settlement exist from the early Bronze Age to the end of the Gallo-Roman era.

In 1334 Medelsheim, which belonged to the County of Zweibrücken , was called Burg und Statt .

At the end of the 14th century the feudal sovereignty fell to the Electoral Palatinate and in 1395 the Counts of Zweibrücken-Bitsch were enfeoffed with Medelsheim.

After the Landshut War of Succession , the feudal sovereignty passed to the Archduchy of Austria in 1504 , which continued to enfeoff the Counts of Zweibrücken-Bitsch with Medelsheim.

The castle Medelsheim was in 1508 by Franz von Sickingen conquered and destroyed. The castle, which was located in the area of today's parish church, was last mentioned in 1576.

In the Thirty Years War Medelsheim was depopulated and devastated in 1635.

In 1656 the house von der Leyen Medelsheim with the attached villages Peppenkum and Seyweiler received a fief from Archduke Ferdinand Karl of Austria.

In 1677 the village was burned down by the troops of the French Marshal Créquy.

As a result of the wars triggered by the French Revolution , the Left Bank of the Rhine became part of the French Republic and in 1798 became the canton's capital in the Donnersberg department .

In 1816 Medelsheim became a municipality in the Rhine district and thus part of the Kingdom of Bavaria .

In 1818 the canton Medelsheim merged with the canton Neuhornbach. Medelsheim remained the seat of the "Mayor's Office Medelsheim", which consisted of the villages of Medelsheim, Peppenkum, Seyweiler and (from 1828) Utweiler .

After the First World War , Medelsheim was assigned to the Saar area in accordance with the provisions of the Versailles Treaty . In 1935, the Saar area was re-incorporated into the German Empire .

In 1937 the "Mayor's Office Medelsheim" was dissolved and it was assigned to the "Mayor's Office Altheim".

During the Second World War , the village with the Red Zone was evacuated in 1939 and 1944. During fighting in the winter of 1939/40 and 1944/45, the place was destroyed to about 84 percent.

After the war, Medelsheim became part of the Saarland in 1947 , which was an independent political entity, but was economically connected to France.

In 1950 the “Mayor's Office Medelsheim” with the independent communities Medelsheim, Peppenkum, Seyweiler and Utweiler was restored.

In 1957 the Saarland, and with it Medelsheim, became part of the Federal Republic of Germany .

As part of the regional and administrative reform in Saarland , the previously independent municipality of Medelsheim was assigned to the municipality of Gersheim on January 1, 1974.

In 1995 Medelsheim won the national competition " Our village should be more beautiful " and received a gold medal for outstanding achievements in the design and maintenance of the village, the landscape and community life.

politics

The districts of Medelsheim and Seyweiler together form a municipality. All of the nine seats on the local council belong to the CDU . The head of the village is Imelda Frenzel (CDU).

Culture and sights

As the center of the traditionally Catholic area of the Parr, Medelsheim has many crossroads in its field, which are connected by a hiking trail.

The Church of St. Martin is based on Roman foundations. It contains Gothic wall paintings and a Gothic retable from around 1430, which was found in 1956.

The Kreuzkapelle for the Sorrowful Mother on the Husarenberg was formerly a pilgrimage chapel. It dates from 1767 and contains a Pietà from 1554.

At the suggestion of Michael von Faulhaber , Bishop of Speyer , the Way of the Cross was laid out in 1920 , the 14 stations of which depict scenes from Christ's Passion. The Way of the Cross leads up to the Husarenberg. The individual stations are worked into simple white pillars with gable roofs as folk-art half-reliefs.

Traditionally, the Jakobsmarkt , which has existed for centuries, takes place on the second Sunday in July , where historical handicrafts are presented in addition to the hustle and bustle of the fair.
