St. Remigius (Wittersheim)
The Church of St. Remigius is a Catholic church dedicated to St. Remigius in Wittersheim , a district of the Mandelbachtal municipality in the Saar- Palatinate district of Saarland . In the list of monuments of the Saarland, the church is a single monument listed.
history
The origins of the church can be traced back to the early days of Christianity in the region. A royal Franconian parish already existed in Wittersheim in the middle of the 8th century . The associated church building in Romanesque style developed into a small church in Gothic style in the course of the Middle Ages . Around 1770 the church was expanded to create a baroque hall . But already in the years 1841 to 1843 the dilapidation of the nave and the choir required their demolition and the subsequent new building. The Romanesque tower from the 13th century was preserved during all construction work .
Violent fighting towards the end of the Second World War , which either destroyed or severely damaged all buildings in the village, devastated Wittersheim. The church was bombed two times on March 14, 1945. As a result, only a side wall and part of the church tower from the 13th century remained. Between 1948 and 1950, the church was rebuilt under difficult conditions according to plans by the architect Wilhelm Schulte junior. ( Speyer ). The parts of the previous church that were not destroyed in the war, i.e. parts of the Romanesque tower and the nave wall, were integrated into the new building. The tower was raised by four meters and, as before, received a pointed helmet . On October 15, 1950, the then Bishop of Speyer Joseph Wendel and parish administrator Emil Brill were able to inaugurate the rebuilt church.
In 2006 the church underwent a restoration .
Furnishing
Inside the church is an altarpiece by the artist Günther Daniel ( Bad Kreuznach ) from 1960. Christ is depicted as Lord of heaven and earth.
organ
The organ of the church was built in 1976 by Hugo Mayer ( Heusweiler ) and consecrated on April 11 of the same year. The abrasive loading -instrument is on a loft positioned and has 13 registers , on two manuals and pedal . The action mechanism is mechanical, the stop action is electrical. Bells
There is a bell in the tower, consisting of four bells . The bells, two thirds of which were financed by in-house collections, were cast in 1957 by the Hamm bell foundry in Frankenthal .
