The Church of St. Josef is a Catholic curative church in Heckendalheim , a district of the Saarland community of Mandelbachtal . The responsible parish is the Visitation of Mary in Ommersheim . Saint Joseph is the church patron . The church is located directly on the Way of St. James .

history

Until 1932 the service for the Catholics took place in Heckendalheim in the neighboring village of Ommersheim. Until the church of St. Josef was completed, an old school that had become vacant, then a hall of an inn, served as a temporary solution . After the citizens of Heckendalheim donated land to the church to build, construction of the church began on July 15, 1952. The plans for this came from the Speyr diocesan master builder Wilhelm Schulte. The local architect Heinrich Sand was responsible for the local construction management. 1200 m³ of stones in the nearby Fuchs and Hellenthal quarries were allowed to be broken free of charge as building material . Local farmers and transport companies provided free transport to the construction site. After a construction period of 15 months, the church was consecrated on August 30, 1953 by the Speyer bishop Isidor Markus Emanuel .

The church building was created in a style that is based on the neo-Romanesque and has five window axes . The interior of the church is dominated by a round arch on the wall of the chancel , which forms the framework for a crucifixion group. In the middle of this group of figures is a wood-carved corpus of Jesus , which was executed in the Gothic style. To the left and right of it are the figures of Our Lady of Sorrows and the Evangelist John . The group of figures is illuminated by two large arched windows in the north wall of the chancel. Also worth seeing in the chancel is the old tabernacle , which originally stood on the altar and is now on a sandstone column. It was subsequently given a bronze cover.

To the left of the chancel there is a figure of the church patron St. Joseph on a plinth . The figure of the saint carries a blessing baby Jesus on her left arm and the model of the church in her right hand. Other works of art inside the church are the painted Way of the Cross , which is the work of a Dominican woman from Speyer , and two windows from 1953, which the architect and glass painter György Lehoczky ( Saarbrücken ) created.

The bells for the church come from the Junker foundry in Brilon ( Westphalia ).

organ

The organ of the church was built in 1904 by the company Gebr. Späth Orgelbau ( Mengen ) and moved to the Heckendalheim church in 1954. When the organ was installed in the church, the Salicional 8 ′ was exchanged for a forest flute 2 ′ by the Späth company. The instrument, which is set up on a gallery , has five registers distributed over a manual and pedal.
