Isidor Markus Emanuel (born October 7, 1905 in Merzalben ; † November 30, 1991 in Waldfischbach-Burgalben ) was Bishop of Speyer from 1953 to 1968 .

Life

Emanuel attended high school in Speyer as a convector , where he graduated from high school in 1924. After studying theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome , he was ordained a priest there on October 26, 1930 and then received his doctorate .

From August 1, 1931, he worked as a chaplain in Dudenhofen for a year and a half . On May 1, 1933, he came to Speyer as cathedral chaplain , and on August 1, 1933, he was appointed sub-rain at the Maria Rosenberg seminary in Waldfischbach-Burgalben. On July 16, 1939, he took over the parish in Hohenecken . Since March 1, 1941 he was rector of the pilgrimage and head of the retreats of the Diocese of Speyer on Maria Rosenberg.

On June 28, 1950, Emanuel became Chapter Chapter . From Pope Pius XII. he was appointed bishop of Speyer on September 22, 1952 and consecrated bishop on February 1, 1953 in Speyer Cathedral by his predecessor Joseph Wendel . After 15 years, on February 10, 1968, he resigned from the leadership of the diocese because of his poor health and was subsequently appointed titular bishop of Marazanae .

He spent his retirement as former bishop in the Maria Rosenberg monastery , which is close to his birthplace Merzalben. He died on November 30, 1991 and was buried on December 6, 1991 in the row of bishops' graves in front of the royal choir of the Speyer Cathedral.

meaning

As a result of the destruction of the Second World War , almost 100 churches had to be rebuilt or rebuilt in the diocese during Emanuel's tenure. A new seminary was built in Speyer in 1956/57, which enabled a two-year practical pastoral training for young priests in their home diocese. The extensive restoration of the Romanesque imperial cathedral from 1957, which restored the original interior design to the church, is considered Emanuel's most important structural measure. Today, however, the reromanization practiced is viewed as a prime example of a re-restoration that was rejected according to current monument conservation criteria. The changes have been partially reversed since 1996.

For the first time in almost 20 years, Emanuel convened a diocesan synod in 1957 . The pastoral climax of his bishopric was his participation in the Second Vatican Council 1962–1965.

Emanuel rendered great services to Franco-German reconciliation and friendship. The reconciliation efforts found particular expression in the construction of the St. Bernhard Church of Peace in Speyer , which was jointly financed by German and French Catholics in 1953/54.
