history

Development up to the early modern period

Towards the end of the 12th century the construction of the Hohenecken Castle ( Middle Latin / Middle High German castro hônecke ) began, at the beginning of the 13th century it was given to a Kaiserslautern ministerial family, which from then on called itself "von Hoheneck" . To the castle belonged the rule Hohenecken, which extended over several villages, with the valley community Hohenecken, with Erfenbach , Espensteig, Siegelbach and Stockweiler , which arose at the foot of the castle hill . For centuries, the castle and the lordship were still considered to be imperial fiefs. During the Peasants' War , Hohenecken Castle was taken by rebel farmers.

In 1668 the castle and the Hohenecken estate were sold to the Duke of Lorraine. The castle was destroyed by French troops during the Orleans War in 1688. In 1733, Duke Franz Stephan of Lothringen , the husband of Empress Maria Theresa , ceded the castle and rule in the so-called Falkenstein Treaty in exchange for other parts of the area to the Palatinate. The rule was subordinated to the Oberamt Lautern and lasted until the end of the 18th century.

Younger story

From 1798 to 1814, when the Palatinate was part of the French Republic (until 1804) and then part of the Napoleonic Empire , Hohenecken was incorporated into the Canton of Kaiserslautern and was subordinate to the Mairie Kaiserslautern . In the same year the municipality of Austria was struck. Just one year later, the place, like the entire Palatinate, changed to the Kingdom of Bavaria . Hohenecken received an independent mayor's office again in 1818. From 1818 to 1862 the community belonged to the Land Commissioner Kaiserslautern ; from this the district office of Kaiserslautern emerged.

In 1882 the first plans for a road construction between Hohenecken and Kaiserslautern were presented, which were realized in 1892. In addition, in 1888, preparations for the construction of a road to Vogelweh began. In 1897 the St. Rochus Church, built by Ludwig Becker , was inaugurated. The village could be reached by stagecoach from 1900 and from 1905 had a public telephone box. Further technical innovations were added in 1913 with the inauguration of the Biebermühlbahn Biebermühle – Hohenecken – Kaiserslautern line.

From 1939, Hohenecken was part of the Kaiserslautern district . After the Second World War , the place became part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate within the French occupation zone . From 1949 the construction of the American plants on the Vogelweh began. The Erfenbacher Sträßchen becomes the main traffic connection from the Kaiserstraße to the country road to Pirmasens. The construction of the bypass road in 1953 and the traffic connections by the municipal transport company from 1957 as well as the inauguration of the Protestant church and the primary school in the same year form further points in the historical development of the village. In 1968 the school gymnasium was built and in 1969 the elementary school was expanded. In the course of the first administrative reform in Rhineland-Palatinate , the community was incorporated into the independent city of Kaiserslautern on June 7, 1969, leaving the district of the same name.

Rochus Chapel
St. Rochus

Hohenecken has a Catholic, a Protestant and an Evangelical Free Church parish. The Hohenecken district used to be an almost exclusively Catholic place; today the population is confessionally mixed due to the large number of immigrants. 42.9% of the community are Catholic, 35.4% of the community are Protestant, 4.5% belong to other religions and about 17.2% do not belong to any religion.

Catholics

The Catholic parish has existed as an independent parish since 1878. In addition to Hohenecken, the pastoral care area also includes the Breitenau, Espensteig and the Dansenberg branch community . After the Rochus Chapel (built in 1748) offered too little space for church visitors, today's parish church St. Rochus was built in the neo-Gothic style in 1896/97 according to the plans of the architect Ludwig Becker from Cologne. The chapel and the church together with the castle form the optical center of Hohenecken, a popular motif for painters and photographers. The old rectory was made available to the Hildegardis sisters in 1965 as a nurses' station. For this purpose, a new rectory was built next to the church in the same year. Since 1974 the parish also has a parish home. The community hall offers space for 180 visitors. There are three youth rooms on the ground floor.

Protestants

The Protestant parish arose after the Second World War, because many Protestants came to the town through the new building areas. In the 1950s the congregation was able to build a church, and church services in the primary school have been a thing of the past since then. The Protestants are looked after by the Dansenberg parish office. In the 1990s, the congregation underwent two major changes: Hohenecken was assigned its own pastor through the deanery, and the construction of the congregation house, which was completed in October 1994, opened up new opportunities for congregational work.

Others

The evangelical free church parish, the Hoffnungskirche Kaiserslautern , was only founded in 2004. For five years the services were held in the old flag hall on Friedenstrasse, until it became too small for the constantly increasing number of people attending the service. In 2009 a large building of its own in Landolfstrasse was acquired.

In Unterwald 2a there is a meeting place for Jehovah's Witnesses .
