Erfenstein is a small village in the Palatinate Forest , which forms one of three annexes to the local community Esthal . The place has about 100 inhabitants and is located in the Bad Dürkheim district in Rhineland-Palatinate .

location

Erfenstein is located in the south-eastern municipality in the Elmsteiner Tal am Speyerbach . Its neighboring village is the hamlet of Iptestal , which belongs to Lambrecht . Immediately south of Erfenstein is the boundary to Neustadt an der Weinstrasse . Other nearby towns are the annexes Breitenstein in the southwest and Sattelmühe in the northeast , which also belong to Esthal . The Wassersteinberg extends southwest of Erfenstein ; with the water stones and the rocky area in the immediate vicinity of the settlement there are also two natural monuments in the catchment area of the village .

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1835.

Culture

The Erfenstein Castle forms a conservation zone; In addition, the Wolf Land- und Jagdhaus and two residential buildings on Schankentalstrasse are under monument protection .

The Spangenberg is already within the boundaries of Neustadt an der Weinstrasse . The latter has been looked after by the Burg Spangenberg Association since 1971. It emerged from a citizens' initiative and was founded on December 5th, 1971 in the former forester's house in Spangenberg.

Around 1930 a Lourdes grotto was laid out in the Schankental and in 1957 a wayside cross at the confluence of Bahnhofsstraße and Talstraße, as a desired church building failed due to insufficient financial resources.

Due to its location in the middle of the Palatinate Forest, there are three former forest houses in Erfenstein (Schankentalstrasse 1, Spangenbergstrasse 9 and 15), which are now used as residential buildings. The listed residential building Schankentalstr. 1 on the corner of Talstrasse was built in 1857 and 1858 by the forest owner at the time, Wolf from Wachenheim, as a hunting lodge in the style of late classicism. In addition, the villas built by the former factory owner Laubscher in the style of the homeland are located in Spangenbergstr. 11 and 13 from the 1920s under monument protection.

Economy and Infrastructure

Infrastructure

Erfenstein has been connected to the power grid since 1921, initially ensuring a supply via a hydropower plant of the local factory and later the connection to the overhead line. The water supply network has existed since 1930, and the water supply has been from Lambrecht since the late 1990s . At the beginning of the twentieth century until the 1940s there was a volunteer fire brigade in the village .

Children from Erfenstein attend the surrounding primary schools in Lambrecht and Esthal. Secondary schools in the area include the Realschule plus Lambrecht and three grammar schools in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse.

economy

From 1910 to 1973 a grocery store with a post office was operated in the village, and at times traveling traders supplied the residents with groceries. The Burgschänke at Spangenberg Castle has been hosting locals and tourists since 1991. Until 2006 there was a restaurant with guest rooms at Talstrasse 12. A plastics company existed in the village until 2007, in whose buildings there was first a sawmill, then the Laubscher wool factory and a textile company for curtains and decorative fabrics. Today the factory building is used by several small businesses. Most of the factory buildings date from the time of the two wool factories Ludwig and Heinrich Laubscher. There was a plastic toy company across from the former wool factory.

traffic

Erfenstein has a station on the museum railway Kuckucksbähnel Lambrecht - Elmstein , which was served by regular trains several times a day from 1909 to 1960.

Originally the Erfenstein platform was located between the bridge over the Speyerbach from the direction of Lambrecht and the 101 turnout in the northern area of the station. During the time of the Bavarian State Railways, it was run as type 2 station. The points originally had a rod drive, which has since been abandoned; however, its remains are still present.

Of all the stops on the way, the station is now the only operating point where train crossings are possible. However, these only rarely occur, for example when special trains travel. Accordingly, Erfenstein currently has an island platform. The western track acts as a crossing or overtaking track. Originally it served exclusively as a loading siding and was only accessible from the direction of Lambrecht. After the conversion to a junction station, the station received another turnout with the number 102. These are rail profiles from regional railways, which were mounted on steel sleepers.

Erfenstein is connected to public transport via Landesstraße 499 , on which regular buses run between Neustadt and Elmstein or Johanniskreuz. In addition, the place is on the Saar-Rhein-Main long-distance hiking trail .
