geography

From 1969 to the dissolution of the inner city districts in 2002, the Kotten belonged to the inner city west / Kotten district with the number 03 within the 18 districts of Kaiserslautern. It is bounded in the north by the Forellenstrasse and the precipice between Turnerstrasse and Kammgarngelände , in the northeast by Burgstrasse, in the south by Pariser Strasse and in the west by the cut of the Lautertalbahn .

history

The city quarter took its name from Kottenfeld, which in turn was named after the “Koden”, the leprosy house, first mentioned in 1348, outside the medieval city, located roughly at today's Apostle Church . The "Kottenstraße" in the northeast of the area was called "Kottenhohl" until 1870, after the ravine that led from the Lauterniederung to the higher Kottenfeld.

In the west of the area, in the area of today's “Kottenschanze” road, a ski jump was built in 1793 by Prussian troops .

In 1834, the surveying of the undeveloped Kottenfeld began in order to build a residential area for factory workers. Jean Schoen (1825–1887), the technical manager of the worsted yarn spinning mill in Kaiserslautern at the time, was instrumental in building a workers' settlement in the center of what is now the district from 1874 onwards. The western part of the area was built on from around 1880. On September 28, 1944, the area was largely destroyed by an air raid. The reconstruction after 1945 took place - with the narrow streets and the small-scale parceling in the eastern part - based on the old town plan of the Kotten.
