The parish church of St. Margaretha in Bebelsheim

The St. Margaretha Church is a Catholic parish church in Bebelsheim , a district of the municipality of Mandelbachtal , Saarpfalz district , Saarland . The patron saint of the church is St. Margaret . In the list of monuments of the Saarland, the church is a single monument listed.

history

A chapel was first mentioned in a document for Bebelsheim in 1267 . It was attached to the south of the tower . In 1737 a new church was built. For this, the old Romanesque nave of the chapel was demolished and a new baroque nave was added on the west side of the tower , which was oriented in a north-south direction. This created a church room 11 meters wide and 14 meters long, to which a choir was attached. In the course of the construction work, the tower was given a conical , pointed helmet instead of the old stone roof . In 1831 the church was expanded to the north according to plans by the Zweibrücken district engineer Paul Camille von Denis (Von Denis was the builder of the first German railway line Nuremberg-Fürth). Thus the church building got its present dimensions. On this occasion, a gallery was built inside the church . The inauguration of the enlarged church took place on July 7, 1842.

St. Margaret has been the patroness of the church since 1809. The house of God was previously dedicated to St. Quintinus .

The church building suffered severe damage in the Second World War . The reconstruction, led by the architect Wilhelm Schulte II ( Speyer ), took place between 1947 and 1956. From 1988 to 1990 the interior of the church was renovated . In addition, the area around the church was redesigned. In 2007-08, the tower was restored by the architect Andreas Michaeli (St. Ingbert- Rohrbach ).

Furnishing

View inside the church

Two wooden figures have survived from the furnishings of the 15th century: St. Remigius and St. Margaretha .

In the southwest corner of the interior, under the gallery, there is a Lourdes grotto , which was built by three Bebelsheim families after the First World War . Altars , pulpit , communion bench , pews and the church bells had to be bought or repaired after the Second World War due to war damage. A way of the cross is attached to the side walls .

Tower and bells

The round tower from the 11th century on the east side of the church is a special feature, as it was not originally used as a church tower. It was probably part of a fortified house of the Knights of Bebelsheim . In addition to the round tower of the St. Margarethenkirche in Bebelsheim, such structures can only be found in the Saarland at the churches of St. Mauritius in Erfweiler-Ehlingen and St. Markus in Reinheim . There are 17 more of these towers in neighboring Lorraine .

In the tower there is a bell consisting of three bells:

No. Surname volume Weight
(kg)
1 Christ king f ' 1056
2 Mother of God as' 600
3 St. Margaret's Bell b ' 350
