The church of St. Markus in Reinheim can be regarded as one of the oldest and most interesting churches in Saarland . In the list of monuments of the Saarland, the church is a single monument listed.

Church building

Location

The Catholic Church of St. Markus is located in the Reinheim district of Gersheim on a small hill on the western edge of the village center. About twenty steps lead up to the sacred building. The church, which consists of a free-standing tower and an attached nave, is bordered by a private house in the east and an imposing rectory in the west. There are numerous epitaphs from earlier centuries in the immediate vicinity of the tower and church . To the northwest of the church is the parish cemetery.

Round tower

A striking landmark and the oldest part of St. Mark's Church is the Romanesque round tower (popularly known as the “Heidenturm” or “Römerturm”), which rises approximately in the middle of the east side of the nave. This arrangement and the round shape of the church tower is very rare in the southwestern region of Germany and in the neighboring regions. According to historians, it was built as a defense tower around the year 1000 ; This assumption is supported by a so-called. " pitch nose " in the form of an animal's mouth, and in the function of a weir bay window , which is located under the cupola. The tower itself is built from blocks of Bliesgau sandstone. In 1488 the tower was used for the first time as a church, as the date incorporated on the console of a so-called Gothic “ sacrament house ” (also called “ soul house ”) shows. In the tower there is a baptistery , which can be reached through a connecting passage from the nave. According to the parish, the tower is said to have served as a Lady Chapel before this function .

Other churches with round towers in the vicinity are St. Margaretha in Bebelsheim and St. Mauritius in Erfweiler-Ehlingen .

inner space

Nave

The nave of St. Markus is of the type of a hall church , which was designed in the years 1790/91 by Peter Reheis , the court architect of Countess Marianne von der Leyen .

Furnishing

The interior of the church is influenced by the late baroque ( rococo ), but without appearing opulent. The entire chancel is dominated by subtle wall paneling, in which an artfully carved confessional is integrated on both sides of the main altar .

Worth mentioning are the colorfully designed church windows in the baptistery, which the Hungarian-Saarland artist György Lehoczky created in 1953. Lehoczky's motifs in the windows are scenes that symbolically represent the work of the Holy Spirit .

pulpit

pulpit

The showpiece of St. Markus is the late baroque pulpit of Johann Martersteck. It is carried by the figure of Samson , who holds the pulpit upright with his right hand. In his left hand, Samson holds his identification mark, a donkey jaw, with which, according to legend, he was said to have killed 1,000 Philistines . Figures of saints are worked into the arched niches of the sermon, while angels hold two tablets of divine laws on the back . The pulpit is crowned by the figure of the Virgin Mary , who is depicted as the victor over the snake .

High altar

In the center of the chancel is the colored high altar , which is said to have been made around 1780 and consists of two pieces. It is crowned by the figure of the Lamb of God , which rises up. The filigree woodwork surrounding it (confessionals, pulpit and parts of the wall paneling) come from the workshop of the regionally important artist Johann Martersteck (also Madersteck), who made them for the Gräfinthal monastery in the years 1733–1736 . The high altar itself does not come from there, as the Gräfinthaler high altar is today in the modern parish church of St. Paul zu Blieshaben-Bolchen . The monastery was razed by French revolutionary troops in 1793 and the furniture was partially destroyed. The legend is told that Reinheim citizens acquired parts of the monastery furniture as alleged firewood, which was tolerated by the French troops.

Side altar

In addition to the high altar, a side altar adorns the interior of the church. The altar, which was created in 1709, is dedicated to the church saint St. Mark . Before its current function as a side altar, it is said to have been the main altar of the previous church. This fact is also indicated by a tradition according to which in the so-called "Marian months" of May and October a statue of Mary is placed on the side altar instead of the figure of St. Mark. Its statue will be brought to the tower's baptistery for the two months.
