Bebelsheim is a local part and municipality of the Mandelbachtal municipality . The place is in the Saarpfalz district in Saarland .

geography

location

Bebelsheim is located in the southern part of the Bliesgau biosphere reserve in the Saar-Palatinate district in Saarland . The place lies on both sides of the Almond Brook , which collects its water at Aßweiler and feeds the Blies at Habkirchen . The area, which is very hilly, has an agricultural character.

climate

The climate is influenced by the Atlantic. The average annual precipitation is 786 mm, the rainiest time is in the spring months. The mean annual temperature is 9 ° C. The long-term average temperature does not drop below 0 ° C even in January. The prevailing wind direction is west / southwest. The bio-climate is mild to irritant-friendly.

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1223. Proven by finds, the origin goes back much further. In the Mühlenbach - Heidenkeller parcel - remains of walls from Roman settlements, hollow and flat bricks, and on the "Ackerglamm" parcel in the Magerbach Valley, iron wagon parts, coins and various forged round bars were found.

In May 1991 two Celtic barrows began to be excavated in the Bebelsheim forest. The Archaeological Association has secured bone and ceramic finds that probably date from the Bronze Age (approx. 700 BC).

A witness from earlier years is also the so-called round tower at the church of Bebelsheim and an old military road in the immediate vicinity of the state border. Bebelsheim has always suffered very badly in the wars of all centuries. Bebelsheim was almost completely destroyed in the Thirty Years' War and suffered a similar fate during the last world war. The degree of total destruction was about 72%, the rest was badly damaged (as a result, there was almost no old building fabric). Only a few houses were built in the old style during the reconstruction.

religion

Bebelsheim is mostly Catholic . The Catholic parish of St. Margaretha belongs to the Blieskastel parish association of the Saarpfalz dean's office in the Speyer diocese . The evangelical Christians belong to Protestant parish Ensheim that of a church in Ormesheim has, in at least once a month worship take place.

According to tradition, the Brudermannsfeld in Bebelsheim was the location where the miracle of Brudermannsfeld is said to have occurred and to which the founding of the neighboring Gräfinthal monastery is said to go back. The Brudermannsfeld is still the destination of Catholic processions and pilgrimage pilgrimages.

Historical background

The village of Bebelsheim is a foundation of the Franconian conquest and belonged with the neighboring Bliesgau places to the old court of hundreds at the "Ormesheimer Berg", which was under the influence of the Counts of Blieskastel at the beginning of the 13th century. After the transition of the County of Blieskastel to Kurtrier , the Electors and Archbishops of Trier exercised the sovereignty and half of the high jurisdiction in Bebelsheim, which came to the Counts von der Leyen in the 17th century . Over the centuries, a large number of landlords were wealthy in Bebelsheim. The most important landlords were the Counts of Saarbrücken ( Saarbrücken-Commercy and later Nassau - Saarbrücken ). A family of the smaller nobility named itself after Bebelsheim as the eponymous seat of the family: the knights and servants of Bebelsheim. These knights of Bebelsheim, who appear in documents from 1223 to 1444, were primarily as castle men in the service of the Counts of Saarbrücken, but also in the service of other gentlemen, e.g. B. in Kirkel , active. The remarkable tower of the church of Bebelsheim (round tower made of plastered quarry stone masonry) dates from 11/12. Century and originally served other purposes, probably it was part of a fortified house of the knights calling themselves after Bebelsheim, similar to Erfweiler . The coat of arms reflects this fact in heraldic form. The three iron hats are taken for the knights and servants of Bebelsheim. The colors red and gold in the head of the shield indicate the first counts of Saarbrücken . In the rest of the shield, the silver post in the blue field and the red cross indicate the sovereignty of Blieskastel , Kurtrier and von der Leyen . The silver cloverleaf pointed cross comes from the coat of arms of the Counts of Saarbrücken-Commercy , while the round tower stands for the Bebelsheim church .

The coat of arms was created by a municipal council resolution on February 6, 1984. The municipality of Bebelsheim, which was independent until 1973, had no coat of arms.
