Ulrich Varnbüler (born 1432 in St. Gallen ; died March 18, 1496 in Lindau ) was a Swiss bailiff and mayor.

Life

Ulrich Varnbüler was councilor and sack master in St. Gallen from 1467, court judge in 1471, 1476 field captain of the St. Galler in Grandson and Murten in Burgundy , 1481/90 alternately mayor , former mayor and imperial bailiff in St. Gallen.

Varnbuler was envoy of the city of St. Gallen to the Reichstag in Nuremberg , and in 1488 envoy to Emperor Friedrich III. in Cologne and Aachen . In 1489 he participated in the feud ( St. Gallen War ) against Abbot Ulrich Rösch of St. Gallen, who wanted to relocate the monastery to Rorschach and had started a new building there, against which the citizens of St. Gallen resisted for economic reasons and the The new building that had been started was destroyed («Klosterbruch von Rorschach»). In February 1460 Ulrich Varnbuler married Agnes Beeli from Belfort Castle . The marriage produced at least four children: Johannes (* 1464 in St. Gallen; † 1545 in Lindau), Ulrich II (* 1474 in St. Gallen; † 1545 in Strasbourg), Katharine and Franz (no dates of birth or death known ).
