Pouzauges is a French municipality with 5514 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017), which in the Vendée in Région Pays de la Loire is located.

geography

The city is located south of the Loire in the Bocage of the Vendée . It is located on the hill Le Puy Crapaud with a height of 285 meters.

history

The fortress of Pouzauges was built by its first masters. In the 13th century it passed to the Mauléons, who completed the building, then through alliance to the Thouars, whose last descendant Gilles de Rais then took it over.

In the 15th century it belonged to the Vendômes, in the 16th century it belonged to the Gouffiers.

Erected by the barony and already partially demolished, the fortress was sold to the Grignons in the 17th century, turned into a prison and confiscated during the revolution.

The palace and the castle were devastated in the French Wars of Religion . Puy-Papin Castle belonged to the General Representative of the Reformed Churches and became a fiefdom of the Huguenots .

The city became famous through the massacres ordered by Louis Grignon . This was the commander of one of the so-called hell columns (French colonnes infernales ) in the uprising of the Vendée .
