Mervent is a French commune with 1,050 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in Vendée in the region of Pays de la Loire ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Fontenay-le-Comte and the canton of Fontenay-le-Comte .

history

Mervent lies on the heights of a wooded massif at the mouth of the Mère River in the Vendée ; as early as the 6th century BC There was a fortified settlement here, the only known settlement in western France from this period. The first excavations took place in spring 2008. Today the Mère is dammed by the Barrage de Mervent .
