Xanton-Chassenon is a French municipality with 729 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Vendée in the region of Pays de la Loire . It belongs to the Arrondissement Fontenay-le-Comte and to the municipal association of Vendée, Sèvre, Autise .
geography
Xanton-Chassenon is located on the northeastern edge of the Marais Poitevin , about 23 kilometers northwest of Niort at an altitude between 7 and 81 m above sea level. The Autise flows through the municipal area of 19.24 km² . In the north, the municipality reaches up to the dammed Vendée . The predominantly flat and almost completely treeless environment extends on the Plaine vendéenne , which consists of calcareous sediment from the former seabed.
The districts of Chassenon le Bourg, Chassenon le Vieux, Saint-Vincent, La Tabac, Vignes and Darlais belong to Xanton-Chassenon .
Neighboring municipalities of Xanton-Chassenon are Foussais-Payré in the north, Saint-Hilaire-des-Loges in the northeast, Rives-d'Autise in the southeast, Saint-Pierre-le-Vieux in the south, Saint-Martin-de-Fraigneau in the southwest, Fontenay-le-Comte in the west and Saint-Michel-le-Cloucq in the northwest.

The municipality of Xanton Chassenon was created in 1827 from the merger of the two municipalities of Xanton and Saint-Martin-de-Chassenon , which were created in 1790 .

The A83 autoroute runs from Nantes to Niort immediately south of the municipality . The railway line from Niort to Fontenay-le-Comte runs through the south of the municipality of Xanton-Chassenon (without a stop).
