Saint-Michel-en-l'Herm is a western French municipality with 2352 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Vendée in the region of Pays de la Loire . It belongs to the Arrondissement Fontenay-le-Comte and the Canton of Luçon . The inhabitants are called Michelais .

Saint-Michel-en-l'Herm is located on the Atlantic coast in the Vendée countryside . Saint-Michel-en-l'Herm is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Saint-Denis-du-Payré in the north, Triaize in the east, L'Aiguillon-sur-Mer in the west and Grues in the northwest.
The former route nationale 746 (today's D1046) runs through the municipality .
history
Originally, the place was on an island on the Pictonic Gulf. In 1017 the Vikings raided the bay.
