It belongs to the arrondissement of Fontenay-le-Comte and the canton of Fontenay-le-Comte (until 2015: canton of Saint-Hilaire-des-Loges ). It has 820 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), who are called Tessonais .

Saint-Martin-de-Fraigneau is located about four kilometers east-southeast of Fontenay-le-Comte .

Saint-Martin-de-Fraigneau is surrounded by the neighboring municipalities of Fontenay-le-Comte in the north and northwest, Xanton-Chassenon in the east and northeast, Saint-Pierre-le-Vieux in the south and Doix lès Fontaines in the west.

The A83 autoroute runs through the southern part of the municipality .
