Ulrich Varnbüler (born June 1, 1474 in St. Gallen ; † 1545 in Strasbourg ) was a diplomat and in 1527 administrator of the Imperial Court Chancellery in Speyer.

Life

Ulrich Varnbüler was born as the second son of the St. Gallen mayor Ulrich Varnbüler and his wife Agnes (née Beeli) and came to Lindau as a child with his parents in 1490.

Ulrich enrolled at the University of Freiburg in 1490 and in Vienna in 1494. In 1542 he became the councilor of Emperor Charles V in Strasbourg, later governor in Nuremberg. He was friends with Erasmus von Rotterdam and with Albrecht Dürer , who immortalized him in a woodcut in 1522 (in the holdings of the Städel Art Institute in Frankfurt / Main).

Ulrich was born with Barbara Dietrich married, no data are available on offspring.
