Ulrich Rösch (born February 14, 1426 in Wangen im Allgäu ; † March 13, 1491 in Wil ) was abbot of the St. Gallen monastery from 1463 to 1491 . He is considered to be one of the monastery's outstanding abbots.

Life

Rösch, a baker's son, was the first abbot of St. Gallen from a middle-class background. Because of his talent, he was accepted into the monastery school and became a monk between 1440 and 1445 . In 1451 it became the large cellar of the monastery, but two years later it had to leave the monastery. 1453/1454 he lived in the Wiblingen monastery near Ulm .

After returning to the home monastery, Rösch became the leading head of the reform-minded conventuals , who opposed conversion to a monastery . In 1457 Rösch became administrator after Abbot Kaspar von Breitenlandenberg had been suspended due to a visitation . In 1463 he gave up his office due to illness, and Rösch was now formally abbot in his place . Breitenlandenberg died that same year.

Rösch's term of abbot was characterized by the strengthening of the monastic discipline, but above all by the consolidation of the monastery finances and the powerful expansion of the sovereignty of the prince abbey. His plan to relocate the monastery to Rorschach in order to free it from the clutches of the city of St. Gallen failed because the citizens of the city of St. Gallen joined forces with the Appenzell people in the " Rorschacher Klosterbruch " in 1489 to start building in Rorschach destroyed. Compensation payments had to be made under pressure from the federal umbrella locations of the monastery, but the monastery remained in the city of St. Gallen. Rösch also promoted the spiritual life of the abbey and emerged as the builder.
