List of the Counts of Saarbrücken

The list of Counts of Saarbrücken introduces the former Saargaugrafen who ruled over the county of Saarbrücken .

In 1080 Siegbert is mentioned for the first time as a count in Saargau , when he was presented with Wadgassen by King Heinrich IV . Count Simon III. laid down the succession for his two daughters Lauretta and Mathilde in a contract of inheritance with Bishop Johann von Metz in 1227. When the county went to Mathilde in 1271, however, the new bishop, Lorenz, objected to the female succession. Mathilde took in league with Duke Friedrich III. of Lorraine took up the fight for their inheritance and was excommunicated for it . The hereditary battles dragged on until after her death, but in the end her son, Simon, was able to prevail. A younger son of Count Johann I founded the Saarbrücken-Commercy line, which in 1417 came into the possession of the County of Roucy .

Through the marriage of Countess Johanna with Count Johann I von Nassau-Weilburg , Saarbrücken came into the possession of the House of Nassau . Because this latter Johann is sometimes called Johann III. is counted (although he was never the ruling Count of Saarbrücken), is sometimes Johann III. von Nassau-Saarbrücken also counted as Johann IV.
