Dietrich Luf I. (Kleve)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dietrich Luf I. von Kleve (* around 1228, † 1277 ) was de iure uxoris Count of Saarbrücken .

He was a younger son of Count Dietrich IV. Von Kleve and Hedwig von Meißen. His older brother was Dietrich V. von Kleve , who inherited the county of Kleve when his father died.

Life

Dietrich Luf, also called Grote Luf in the sources , married the heiress Lauretta von Saarbrücken in 1252 and tried to take possession of the County of Saarbrücken , but failed and returned to the County of Kleve . However, he still held the title of “Count of Saarbrücken” until 1259. Dietrich Luf had several children with his second wife Elisabeth (or with unknown concubines). Around 1255, the old Count Dietrich IV divided the government largely between his two living sons, with the later Dietrich V being assigned the Klever core area, while Dietrich Luf received the peripheral areas, including the important city of Wesel . He may have built Kranenburg Castle , which was first mentioned in 1270. Dietrich Luf was involved in several feuds and was in conflict with his brother around 1270. He died between April 7 and July 20, 1277.
