Friedrich III. (Lorraine)
Friedrich III. ( called Ferry in France ) (* 1238 ; † December 31, 1302 ) from the House of Châtenois was Duke of Upper Lorraine from 1251 until his death. He was the only son of Duke Matthew II and Catherine of Limburg .
He was not yet thirteen when his father died, so his mother reigned him for the first few years. In 1255 he married Margaret of Navarre, daughter of Theobald I , King of Navarre and Count of Champagne , and Margaret of Bourbon .
This marriage led to rapprochement between France and Lorraine. This connection was strengthened when the daughter ( Johanna I of Navarre ) of the brother ( Henry I ) of his wife Margarete married Philip the Fair , later King of France , in 1284 .
During his reign he fought against the Bishop of Metz until Pope Clement IV excommunicated him and placed the duchy under an interdict .
