Romont is a French commune with 391 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Vosges department in the Grand Est region . It belongs to the Arrondissement Épinal and the Région de Rambervillers municipal association .

geography

location

Romont is located about four kilometers northwest of Rambervillers and about 20 kilometers east of Charmes in flat undulating terrain between the river valleys of the Moselle and Mortagne .

topography

538 hectares of the 19.43 km² communal area are communal forest ( Bois du Marquis ). This forest area is only a small part of the 100 km² Forêt de Rambervillers . In the municipality of Romont, several streams ( Ruisseau de la Prairie, Ruisseau du Habu, Ruisseau des Roses, Ruisseau de Pierre ) flow in a fan shape to the northeast to Mortagne . The terrain is only slightly embossed; only in the wooded south-west are heights of more than 300 m above sea level. The highest point in the municipality is reached here at 345 m. Immediately north-west of the village of Romont is the elongated mountain spur Haut des Vignes , up to 330 m high , on whose flanks grapevines thrive.

Neighboring municipalities of Romont are Saint-Maurice-sur-Mortagne in the north, Roville-aux-Chênes in the northeast, Rambervillers in the east, Vomécourt in the southeast, Bult in the south, Padoux in the southwest, Moyemont in the west and Hardancourt in the northwest.

history

The history of Romont is closely linked to the priory located here. The priory was founded at the end of the 11th century by a monk named Hugues from the nearby Moyenmoutier Abbey . Little is known about the history of the priory; for the year 1711 it is recorded that Benedictines of the Congrégation de Saint-Vanne et Saint-Hydulphe (Vannists) looked after the priory depending on the Abbey of Saint-Vanne . Romont has always been a community characterized by agriculture and forestry. The wealth of forests and game is represented in the coat of arms by a hunting trophy . In addition to a silver fleur de lys, there are two clefs on the coat of arms , which stand for the Romont-born ancestors of the Polish pianist and composer Frédéric Chopin .
