Girmont-Val-d'Ajol is a French commune with 251 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Vosges department in the Grand Est region ( Lorraine until 2015 ). It is part of the Épinal arrondissement and the Porte des Vosges Méridionales municipal association .

The municipality of Girmont-Val-d'Ajol is located in the southwestern Vosges , about ten kilometers south of Remiremont , seen more spaciously between Épinal and Belfort .

The 16.67 km² municipal area of Girmont-Val-d'Ajol borders the Franche-Comté region in the south and comprises the 600 to 750 meters high mountainous region east of Le Val-d'Ajol. The Rhine-Rhône watershed runs to the east of the municipality . Several mountain streams in the municipality - including the Combeauté , whose source is in the northeast of the municipality - drain via the Sémouse , the Lanterne and the Saône to the Rhône and thus to the Mediterranean, while the neighboring municipality of Rupt to the east lies in the Moselle valley .

Forests cover about 60% of the municipality, especially in the ridge areas in the east and north. Most of them belong to the Forêt d'Hérival . Most of the agricultural land consists of pasture land.

The community has a very relaxed settlement character, only around the church the buildings are a bit denser. The municipality consists of the hamlets of Clairegoutte, Le Beuny, Le Girmont d'Amont, Le Dropt, Le Sauceley, Les Faings Potots and Les Quatre Vents . In addition to the numerous mountain farms, there are many holiday homes, some of which are detached.

Neighboring municipalities of Girmont-Val-d'Ajol are Le Val-d'Ajol in the west and north, Saint-Étienne-lès-Remiremont and Dommartin-lès-Remiremont in the northeast, Rupt-sur-Moselle in the east and La Montagne and La Rosière in the south.

The Prieuré d'Hérival , a priory that was built around 1080 and destroyed in 1800, was significant for the area . Only the guest house of the priory remains today. Hérival and what is now the municipality of Girmont-Val-d'Ajol belonged to the area of influence of the Remiremont chapter . The place Herival belonged to the municipality until 1832, before it was added to the neighboring municipality of Le Val-d'Ajol.

The Church of the Immaculate Conception ( l'église de l'Immaculée-Conception ) was built in 1870, ten years later the school and mayor's building was inaugurated.

The municipality was created in 1869 when it was separated from the municipality of Le Val-d'Ajol .

Economy and Infrastructure

There are small farms and handicrafts in Girmont-Val-d'Ajol. 15 farms are located in the community (fruit and vegetable growing, dairy farming, breeding horses, cattle, sheep, goats and snails). Some of the residents work in the tourism industry, some commute to neighboring communities.

In the Girmont-Val-d'Ajol area there are numerous hiking trails and a mountain bike route, and cross-country trails are groomed in winter. In addition to numerous holiday homes, there are several hotels, restaurants and pensions in the municipality.

The community is located away from the national traffic arteries. Road connections lead to the municipalities of Le Val-d'Ajol , Rupt-sur-Moselle , La Montagne and the town of Remiremont .
