View of Rupt-sur-Moselle

The 45.55 km² large municipal area of Rupt-sur-Moselle comprises an approximately ten kilometer long section of the upper Moselle valley , the width of which varies between 2000 meters (district Hielle ) and 1000 meters ( La Roche / Longchamp ). The valley floor of the Moselle lies on the municipal border with Ferdrupt at 444 meters, on the border with Vecoux at 399 meters above sea level. The Moselle valley is flanked by mountains, some of which rise steeply, reaching a height of 810 meters in the south-west on the border with the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region and a maximum of 898 meters in the north-east. The 620 m high pass Col du Mont de Fourche forms a cut in the south , over which a road leads to Luxeuil-les-Bains . The pass and the southwest border of the municipality form the watershed to the catchment area of the Rhone . In the municipality, the mountain streams Ruisseau de Moinrupt and Ruisseau de Grandrupt, coming from the northeast, flow into the Moselle.

The forests, which cover about 75% of the municipality, belong to the forest areas Forêt de Raddon (in the west), Forêt Domaniale de Longegoutte (in the north and northeast) and Bois du Ménil (in the south). The Moselle valley leaves little space for arable land between the residential and commercial areas. In contrast, pastures and grasslands can be found up to the high altitudes.

history

Already in Roman times, the route from Metz to Basel led over the upper Moselle valley and thus through today's area of Rupt-sur-Moselle. Before the French Revolution, the scattered settlement structure belonged to the abbesses of the Chapitre de Remiremont .

The municipality of Rupt was created in 1789 by the division of the Ban de Longchamp , from which the municipality of Dommartin-lès-Remiremont , later Vecoux and Ferdrupt, emerged . The hamlets of Longchamp, La Roche, La Dermanville, Lette, Rupt, Le Dessus de Rupt, Saulx, Lépange, Les Meix and Maxonchamp were combined to form the municipality of Rupt (1801 still with the spelling Rupz ), which in 1904 to Rupt-sur-Moselle was renamed.

Until the middle of the 19th century, the inhabitants lived from agriculture and livestock farming, and the farmers also earned their living as lumberjacks, craftsmen, joiners, clog makers and team leaders. The first spinning mill was built in the hamlet of Saulx as early as 1934. After 1870, the textile industry experienced a new, increased boom when businesses owned by Alsace who had fled the Germans settled there.

In June 1940 the "Fort de Rupt" (or Fort Caulaincourt) was quickly captured by troops of the Wehrmacht , namely the 6th Panzer Division under General Werner Kempf , as part of the western campaign .

The textile industry began to decline in the 1970s. Only gradually could new jobs be created, including in plastics and metal processing and in mechanical engineering.

Population development

The population of the municipality of Rupt-sur-Moselle testifies to the loss of many jobs in the textile industry since the 1970s. The settlement of many new companies has not yet fully compensated for the churn rate.

Col du Mont de Fourche

The heavily frequented Route nationale 66 ( European route 512 ) from Épinal over the Col de Bussang to Mulhouse leads south as a bypass to Rupt-sur-Moselle and ends as a two-lane expressway on the border with the neighboring municipality of Ferdrupt . Another important road connection leads over the Col du Mont de Fourche to Luxeuil-les-Bains and Lure .

Partnerships

Rupt-sur-Moselle has had a partnership with the community of Stadecken-Elsheim in Rheinhessen since 1980 ; The initiator and sponsor of this partnership is the longtime mayor of Rupt-sur-Moselle Robert Parmentier . There is a lively student exchange between the Collège Jean Montémont in Rupt-sur-Moselle and the Marie-Curie-Gymnasium in Bönen (near Dortmund).

Regular events

The traditional herring fair takes place on the third Sunday in March in Rupt-sur-Moselle - in 2009 for the 127th time. It emerged as the only surviving one of the original twelve herring fairs before 1825 and has its roots in this epoch, when salted fish were bought from overseas during Lent because local fish from rivers and ponds were reserved for the nobles.
