Location of the town of Le Thillot in the Vosges department |
Le Thillot is a French commune with 3438 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) in the Vosges department in the Grand Est region ( Lorraine until 2015 ). It belongs to the Arrondissement Épinal and is the seat of the community association Communauté de communes des Ballons des Hautes-Vosges .
geography
The small town of Le Thillot on the upper Moselle is located in the Vosges in the extreme south-east of Lorraine and borders the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region in the south . Remiremont , the next larger town, is 24 kilometers from Le Thillot.
The municipality of Le Thillot extends from the valley of the Moselle , which is around 1000 meters wide here, to the ridge slopes to the northeast and south of the village. In the northeast, at 950 meters, the highest point in the municipality is reached. In the south, the Col du Croix at an altitude of 679 meters forms the transition to a high plateau that forms the watershed to the catchment area of the Saône . The mountain streams Ruisseau Le Vacceux and Ruisseau de Couard come from the south in the municipality ; the Ménil , which characterizes the north of the municipality, flows into the Moselle in the neighboring municipality of Ramonchamp.
The forests, which make up just under half of the 15.14 km² municipal area, belong to the Bois du Hinguenet and Forêt Domaniale du Géhand forest areas . The height of almost 500 meters above sea level in the upper Moselle valley does not allow for any economic agriculture, so that pastures dominate, which stretch over the slopes up to the high elevations.
The city center with the Saint-Jean-Baptiste church is on the right bank of the Moselle. The settlement axes of Le Thillot and Fresse-sur-Moselle to the east have now grown together along the Moselle. Another axis that runs across the Moselle valley links the district of Le Prey . Other districts are Les Ves in the northeast and Les Mines in the south. These are collections of mountain farms.
Neighboring communities of Le Thillot are Le Ménil in the north, Fresse-sur-Moselle in the east, Haut-du-Them-Château-Lambert and Ramonchamp in the west.
history
Already in Roman times the route from Metz to Basel led over the upper Moselle valley and thus through Le Thillot. Before the French Revolution, the scattered settlement structure around Le Thillot belonged to the abbesses of the Chapitre de Remiremont . The current municipality of Le Thillot was created by splitting off from the Ban de Ramonchamp on June 30, 1860 by ministerial decree. The name Thillot probably comes from the French word tilia ( lime tree ), which also appears as the central symbol of the coat of arms.
Between 1560 and 1760 the dukes of Lorraine operated copper mines south of Le Thillot. The name of the district of Les Mines still reminds of this period . Some of the tunnels and mouth holes have recently been secured and made accessible to visitors (show mine).
Until the middle of the 19th century, the inhabitants lived from agriculture and livestock farming, and the farmers also earned their living as lumberjacks, craftsmen, joiners, clog makers and team leaders. After 1870, the textile industry experienced a new, increased boom when businesses owned by Alsace who had fled the Germans settled there. The textile industry began to decline in the 1970s. Only gradually could new jobs be created, including in plastics and metal processing and in mechanical engineering.

Population development
The population of the municipality of Le Thillot testifies to the loss of many jobs in the textile industry since the 1970s. The settlement of new companies could not compensate for the churn rate.

Economy and Infrastructure
Only a few residents of Le Thillot are still employed in agriculture and forestry. There are 16 farms in the city area (dairy farming, breeding horses, cattle, sheep and goats). The industrial park le Prey (Zone d'aménagement concerté le Prey) was established north of the town center . The companies based in Le Thillot today with over 100 employees include:
- SA Curien (civil engineering)
- Neotec France SA (sheet metal processing, surface technology)
- SOVOS - Tanneries Grosjean (one of the largest tanneries in France)
- Tissage Mouline Thillot (weaving mill founded in 1926)
In addition, many workers commute to other industrial areas in the upper Moselle valley.
Le Thillot has increasingly focused on tourism in recent years and has now been developed for tourism through hotels, guest houses, holiday homes and a campsite. A tourist office (Office de tourisme) in town coordinates the activities.
With 3745 inhabitants (2006), Le Thillot is the largest municipality in the Moselle valley above Remiremont and, with its shopping facilities and cultural offerings, it is an urban center in the region. Le Thillot is also an educational location with three elementary schools, one secondary school and a kindergarten.
The traffic in Le Thillot is characterized by the heavily frequented Route nationale 66 ( European route 512 ) from Épinal via the Col de Bussang to Mulhouse , which leads through the middle of the small town, which leads to considerable obstructions, especially during rush hour. A bypass of the N 66 has been planned for many years. The main traffic axis is crossed in Le Thillot by the département road 468, which leads from Gérardmer to Lure in Franche-Comté .
The former station building and the street name Rue de la Gare are reminiscent of the disused railway line from Remiremont to Bussang .
