Charmois-l'Orgueilleux is a French commune in the Vosges department in the region of Grand Est . It belongs to the Arrondissement Épinal and the municipal association Épinal .

geography

Location of the municipality of Charmois-l'Orgueilleux in the Vosges department

The municipality of Charmois-l'Orgueilleux is an average of 340 meters above sea level and extends from the valley of the upper Côney to a high plateau that forms a section of the watershed between the catchment areas of Saône / Rhône and Moselle / Rhine . The Saône spring is only a few kilometers west of the municipality.

The almost circular municipal area, which is very large for Lorraine with 35.92 km², includes the main town of Charmois and the districts of La Neuve-Verrerie, Nobaimont, Reblangotte and Saucenot . Three small rivers ( Reblangotte, Aurier and Francogney ) arise on the Rhine-Rhône watershed in the northwest of the municipality and flow parallel to the southeast of the Côney river bed , which is occupied by the Canal des Vosges . The old course of the Côney forms the southwestern municipal boundary. Charmois-l'Orgueilleux is located in an agricultural area made up of arable and meadow land. From north to west to south, extensive forests ( Morampierre, Forêt du Ban d'Harol ) extend in a crescent shape around the center , which make up 2086 hectares or 57% of the municipal area. Oak and beech are the main tree species with two thirds each; a third is shared by fir, spruce, pine and Douglas fir.

Neighboring communities of Charmois-l'Orgueilleux are Harol and Dommartin-aux-Bois in the north, Uzemain in the east, Xertigny and La Chapelle-aux-Bois in the south-east, Harsault in the south, Vioménil in the west and Escles in the north-west.

history

The name of the community consists of the parts charme (German = hornbeam ) and orgueil (German = pride ). It is probably related to a Templar watchtower that was located above the village and was protected by beech hedges. Another version uses the Celtic word org (= hill) in connection with -illeux , a suffix that indicates enlargement / multiplication.

During the Ancien Régime , Charmois-l'Orgueilleux was part of the Ban ( Bann ) d'Harol , half of which belonged to the territory of the Dukes of Lorraine and half to the Chapter of Remiremont . In 1709 a first church was built, which was subordinate to the Chapter Poussay (destroyed in 1793) within the Diocese of Toul .

In 1790, today's community emerged from existing small settlements and hamlets. At first it was called Charmois , from 1801 Charmois-l'Orgueilleux .

The community, which has grown to over 1000 inhabitants, was the reason to build a new church in the 19th century. The Saint Léger church was consecrated on April 23, 1829, and the bell tower with three bells was completed in 1832.

On the border to the neighboring municipality of Uzemain , a small harbor basin was created with the construction of the Canal des Vosges in 1884. At that time, grinding wheels made mainly of sandstone were shipped . The berth is still of a certain importance for sport boat tourism today.

In the hamlet of La Neuve-Verrerie , located southwest of the village center and surrounded by forest, there was a glassworks founded in 1559 , which - after being interrupted by the Thirty Years' War - produced glass bottles until around 1850. Nothing has been preserved from this glassworks.

Population development

With 587 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) Charmois-l'Orgueilleux is one of the medium-sized municipalities in Lorraine. Due to the large area, the population density is one of the lowest in the region. The steady decline in the number of inhabitants in the last 130 years was stopped from the 1980s (in 1876 there were still over 1200 people).
