geography

Location of the commune of Golbey in the Vosges department

The municipality of Golbey is located just north of Épinal , the capital ( prefecture ) of the Vosges department. The settlement area of Golbeys has grown together with Épinal in several places. There are also overarching settlement and industrial areas to the southwest bordering Chantraine and to Chavelot in the north.

The approximately nine and a half square kilometers large municipal area of Golbey comprises the area between the Moselle , which borders Golbey in the east and the forest area of the Forêt de Souche-Thaon , which gradually rises to the northwest and of which the municipality has a share of about 150 hectares.

The Canal des Vosges runs right through Golbey, the level of which is raised here by 44 meters by the Golbey lock staircase with 15 locks from the Moselle valley to the apex position .

The residential areas in Golbey adjoin Épinal to the north and north-west, separated by the Val d'Olima , while four industrial areas (referred to as ZI No. 1 to 4) connect to the Golbeys residential areas to the west and north and thus close to the canal locks.

Neighboring municipalities of Golbey are Chavelot in the north, Dogneville in the northeast, Épinal in the east and south, Chantraine and Les Forges in the southwest, Uxegney in the west and Domèvre-sur-Avière in the northwest.

history

Golbey's recent history is closely related to the textile industry. The first large spinning mill was built here in 1891. The factory called La Gosse was founded by Adolphe Vogelweith , a former engineer from Alsace. The company was constantly expanding and in 1914 had over 400 employees. Many houses in Golbey date back to when new housing developments were being built.

By 1930 the company had specialized in the production of fine cotton yarns and had over 500 employees. Even after the Second World War, which the company survived with only minor damage, modernization continued. Despite increasing international competition, the textile industry in Golbey was able to hold its own until the 1990s. After outsourcing, partial sales, restructuring and layoffs, the last machines and part of the workforce were relocated to nearby Saint-Nabord in 1997. This is how a long tradition ended in Golbey. The loss, which can also be traced to industrial wasteland, has so far only been partially offset by new companies.
