Le Clerjus [ lə klɛʁˈʒy ] is a French commune with 568 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Vosges department in the Grand Est region ( Lorraine until 2015 ). It belongs to the Arrondissement Épinal and the municipal association Épinal .

The 32.9 km² municipal area includes the main town of Le Clerjus, the districts of La Fosse, La Landre, Lassus, Le Champ, Le Haut des Champs, Le Molieu, Le Moncel, Le Noirmont, Les Censeaux and Sous le Bois . The municipality in the Vôge is located at around 410 meters above sea level on a high plateau between the Saône tributaries, the Côney and Sémouse , which flow to the south-west, and thus belongs to the Saône catchment area in the extreme south of the former Lorraine region.

In the southeast, the terrain slopes steeply to the Sémouse, which here also forms the border with the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region . The forest area Bois du Clerjus occupies the north-western half of the municipality.

Neighboring municipalities of Le Clerjus are La Chapelle-aux-Bois in the north, Xertigny in the northeast, Plombières-les-Bains in the east, Aillevillers-et-Lyaumont in the south and Trémonzey and Bains-les-Bains in the west.

Toponymy

The name of the place called Clerjoux until the early 18th century can be derived from the Latin terms Clarus (clear) and Juris (wooded height).

Economy and Infrastructure

19 farms are located in the municipality (vegetable growing, dairy farming, breeding horses, cattle, sheep, goats and poultry). There are also small craft businesses and a forestry company in Le Clerjus. Some workers commute to the surrounding larger towns.

Départementsstrasse 164 ( Saint-Loup-sur-Semouse - Contrexéville ) leads southwest past Le Clerjus. The Bains-les-Bains train station on the Nancy - Belfort line , operated by TER Lorraine , is in the municipality of Le Clerjus.
