Location of the commune of Les Voivres in the Vosges department

Les Voivres is located at an average altitude of 370 m above sea level, three kilometers north of Bains-les-Bains and 23 kilometers southwest of Épinal in southern Lorraine.

The community area of 12.8 km² borders in the west on the Côney , a tributary of the upper Saône ; the Canal des Vosges runs immediately west parallel to the Côney in a narrow valley. The Ruisseau Jeandin in the north and the Ruisseau de Bagnerot in the south-east form the boundaries of the communal area that extends over the Vôge plateau . In the west of the municipality, forest areas ( Bois la Chèvre, Le Faing Martin ) determine the landscape, in the rest of the area there is a mix of pastures, fields and smaller forest islands, of which the 100 hectare forest Le Grand Bois is to be emphasized.

The settlement structure of the municipality of Les Voivres is loose. In addition to a small village center with a church and a combined Mairie and school building, the residents are spread over numerous hamlets and individual farms. The hamlets named include La Grande Fosse, La Basse des Orges, Le Chaudiron, Le Ban Saint-Pierre, Le Beaulieu, Le Grand Bois and La Tranchée .

Neighboring municipalities of Les Voivres are La Chapelle-aux-Bois in the east and La Vôge-les-Bains in the south-west, west and north-west.

history

The place has been known under the name Les Voivres since 1711. There are several theories about the origin of the name. The historian Auguste Longnon assumes that the Latin vevra (for wasteland with bushes) was the inspiration; the name researcher Ernest Nègre also supports this interpretation in his work Toponymie générale de la France , referring to the French etymological dictionary by Walther von Wartburg refers. As with the place names Vabre and Vabres, the Romanists Albert Dauzat and Charles Rostaing see the Gallic vobero or vabero (for a hidden river) as the origin.

The area around Les Voivres has been populated for a very long time. At a bend in the Côney , there are traces of a Gallo-Roman settlement ( Le Pont-des-Fées ). In the Middle Ages, the area that is now the municipality of Les Voivres was part of the communal possessions of Bains-les-Bains .

Population development

After a long lasting downward trend due to a lack of job opportunities, the population of Les Voivres has stabilized again since the 1990s. This is due to an initiative by the municipality that bought and renovated old abandoned land and buildings and rented them cheaply to young families who were approached through advertisements in local newspapers. From the original minimal goal of avoiding the closure of the primary school in the community, over the years a nationally recognized and award-winning initiative emerged over the years, which, in addition to the relocation of families, also focused on economic development (new bakery, installation of a fish farm) .
