In the south of the municipality, a bank slope is wooded over a length of 1500 meters, the 4.88 km² municipality area consists mostly of fields and meadows.

history
Burial mounds were discovered near Marainville-sur-Madon in 1977. The remains of a chariot were found in which a dignitary was buried. The grave goods included a sword with an iron blade and an ivory knob decorated with amber, as well as horse harness and a bronze cup. The finds were dated to the sixth century BC and show the extensive trade relations between the Lorraine region and the Baltic Sea and the Mediterranean region at that time.
In 1932 the parish name was given the addition -sur-Madon to better distinguish it from the parish of Marainciller .
