geography

The municipality of Chavelot is located seven kilometers north of Épinal , the capital ( prefecture ) of the Vosges department. The 6.16 square kilometer municipal area of Chavelot comprises an area between the Moselle , which borders the municipal area in the east, the Canal des Vosges , which runs parallel to the west of the Moselle, and the forest area of the Forêt de Souche-Thaon , which gradually rises to the west , on which the Municipality has a share of about 50 hectares. Between the Moselle and Canal des Vosges, of which three of its 93 locks are located in the Cavelots area, three gravel pits were dug to extract building materials, the total area of which is around 35 hectares.

The settlement area around the old village center of Chavelot is concentrated in the northern half of the municipality on the left bank of the Moselle, whose valley floor is only 200 meters wide here. In the north, the settlement area merges seamlessly with that of the municipality of Thaon-les-Vosges ; in the south, Chavelot is directly connected to Golbey by industrial areas , resulting in a coherent built-up area along the Moselle of around 18 kilometers in length.

Chavelot has a typical suburban character, in addition to the small old village center around the church, single-family houses that have been built in the last 40 years dominate the community.

Neighboring municipalities of Chavelot are Capavenir Vosges in the north and northeast, Dogneville in the east, Golbey in the south and Domèvre-sur-Avière in the southwest and west.

history

Chavelot was built on the Roman road that led north along the Moselle.
