Gun Museum Suhl

The Arms Museum in Suhl presents the technical development of handguns in the historic malt house in the middle of the city of Suhl . It is one of the most important specialty museums in Germany.

In 1668 the city built the lower malt house directly on the Lauter due to the fire hazard . The three-wing complex has continuous vaulted cellars on which there is a massive base floor, a half-timbered upper floor and a steep roof structure. After the brewing rights were lost in the 19th century, it was converted for residential purposes. Since another extensive renovation in 1971, the building has been used as a municipal weapons museum.

The weapons collection shows the almost 600-year history of the Suhl handguns production on three floors. Visitors are informed about the complete manufacture of weapons, starting with mining , iron ore extraction , the work of stockpakers , armourers and engravers . Over 460 weapons and many other exhibits are shown in the museum's rooms.

In the weapons museum there is also a section that shows the porcelain production in Suhl from 1861 to 1930.

From 2000 to 2006 the museum was directed by the military historian Thomas Müller .
