The Geißlerhaus museum is a local history and technology museum in Neuhaus am Rennweg in the south of Thuringia . It is located in the birthplace of the glass blower and instrument maker Heinrich Geißler (1814–1879) in the Igelshieb district .

It is operated by the Friends of the Heimatmuseum Geißlerhaus Neuhaus am Rennweg e. V.

history

Heinrich Geißler was a pioneer of electricity and vacuum technology . His investigations with low-pressure gas discharge tubes , so-called Geissler tubes , led to new knowledge in the research field of gas discharge physics. The continuation of these experiments enabled the discovery of X-rays and opened the door to atomic and nuclear physics . The Geissler aspirator is also known in specialist circles, a mercury vacuum pump without which, basically, the manufacture of the Geissler tubes and their many successors would not have been possible.

The building at Sonneberger Str. 106 was erected in the middle of the 18th century as a house for a family of glassblowers in the style typical of Thuringian places in the slate mountains (including a crooked hip roof , symmetrical to the street front, dwarf house , entrance on the eaves). It contained both living and working spaces. On the 50th anniversary of Heinrich Geißler's death, a memorial plaque was put up in 1929. It was used as a residential building until it was purchased by the city of Neuhaus am Rennweg around 1980. After that, it was the city, the VEB microelectronics Neuhaus , the VEB Kreisbau Neuhaus and the after work brigade Franz Eberhardt expanded rebuilt and. On May 26, 1989, the 175th birthday of Heinrich Geißler, it was inaugurated as a local museum .

After another renovation and expansion from 2008, the newly designed Geißlerhaus was opened on October 14, 2010 .
