The Arnstadt depot is now a railway museum in Arnstadt in Thuringia .

Since 1992 the railway depot (Bw) Arnstadt is home to steam locomotives of the former Reichsbahndirektion Erfurt . It is located on the leading of the Thuringian Forest railway line Erfurt-Schweinfurt (Course book route 570) to the 70-km long railway line Erfurt-Arnstadt-Saalfeld (Course book route 563) and at the railway line to Ilmenau (Course book route 566). Dedicated railway workers succeeded in 1994, the continued existence of the system of railway operations work Arnstadt with the establishment of the development association Bw Arnstadt / hist. to secure and it in the railway museum Bahnbetriebswerk Arnstadt / hist. to convert.

history

From 1867 train operations on the Erfurt – Arnstadt line began. A year later, the Arnstadt depot went into operation. A two-room coach house and the simplest locomotive treatment systems were built on the site . In 1879, train operations began on the Arnstadt – Plaue section and in 1884 on the Plaue - Oberhof - Suhl section . Train operations on the Arnstadt – Saalfeld section were added in 1894/95.

Today's depot ( locomotive shed with tracks 1-5) was put into operation in 1898. Due to the increase in rail traffic , the facilities of the depot were constantly expanded, so that today a locomotive shed with 22 stands is available. A waterworks owned by the railway was built in Liebenstein in 1935/36 to supply low-lime boiler feed water .

From 1955 to 1973 steam locomotives with pulverized coal firing were stationed at the Arnstadt depot. Therefore, in 1961 a special grinding and bunker system for coal dust was put into operation. In 1978 the line between Neudietendorf and Erfurt was electrified. The coke and scrap store was converted into a welding workshop and manual warehouse in 1985 . After being converted into a railway museum, the warehouse was renovated in 1994/95.

Equipment and tasks of the depot

For the maintenance of locomotives different systems are available: a four-spindle axis sink serves the exchange of wheelsets of locomotives . Various cranes are available for the exchange of assemblies of the locomotives, but also for coaling the steam locomotives. The access to the locomotive shed is via a turntable with a 23 m diameter. The turntable can be driven with electricity , compressed air or a hand crank . In addition, the turntable is equipped with a capstan system, which makes it possible to move locomotives without a towing vehicle during demonstrations.

The depot has three tracks with a direct track connection to the Arnstadt Hbf station . One of these tracks is intended as a steam locomotive treatment track. A sanding tower, a water crane , an inclined elevator for slag , two different coal cranes and other devices are used for the maintenance and care of the steam locomotives.

In 1984, the Neudietendorf –Arnstadt section was electrified because there was insufficient capacity for the city express trains from Meiningen to Berlin at Erfurt main station for changing locomotives , providing additional passenger coaches and nightly coach handling. After the fall of the Wall , this connection was discontinued, the electrified line lost its importance, and this task was also omitted for the Arnstadt depot. In 1996, the catenary between Neudietendorf and Arnstadt was taken out of service and later dismantled.

Electric locomotives

The Neudietendorf – Arnstadt section was electrified in 1984 due to the permanent overloading of the Erfurt railway junction . This was intended to ensure that through trains were already hauled by electric locomotives in Arnstadt . For this purpose, several electric locomotives were stationed in Arnstadt, some of which took over the transport of the express trains to Berlin. So also were freight trains , from the NSW came -countries from Eisenach moved to Arnstadt with diesel traction and re-clamped in Arnstadt. After dismantling the electrical overhead line , the south-west curve at the Neudietendorf track triangle , the junction towards Eisenach, was removed.
