The Mainz Stadtwerke AG (MSW) is a municipal enterprise of the city of Mainz , and provides services and products in the core areas of electricity, gas and water supply and water production and public transport for the city of Mainz and surrounding communities.

Mainz mobility

MSW is involved in around 50 individual companies and outsourced companies. For example, Mainzer Verkehrsgesellschaft (MVG) is a wholly-owned subsidiary. MVG operates local public transport with buses and trams as well as the bicycle rental system MVGmeinRad in Mainz and some neighboring areas under the brand name “Mainz Mobility”.

At the beginning of 2018, the Stadtwerke Group took over the Taubertsbergbad above Mainz main station. Mainzer Stadtbad GmbH - also a wholly owned subsidiary of MSW - is responsible for operation.

power supply

Since October 2016, Mainzer Stadtwerke Vertrieb und Service GmbH has been offering electricity and gas products again under the “Mainzer Energie” brand in Mainz and the surrounding area. There are joint holdings with the neighboring city of Wiesbaden , for example in the power plants Mainz-Wiesbaden AG, in which the Mainzer Stadtwerke AG and the ESWE supply AG each hold 50% of the shares. In addition, Mainzer Stadtwerke AG is involved in infrastructure development, for example in developing the Mainz customs port and the Heiligkreuzviertel in Mainz into large residential and business districts.

District heating in Mainz

Mainzer Fernwärme GmbH (MFW) has been responsible for the distribution and sale of heat in Mainz since it was founded in 1960 , which is primarily produced in an environmentally friendly manner by means of combined heat and power in gas-fired power plants and a waste-to-energy plant . Mainzer Fernwärme GmbH was called Heizkraftwerk GmbH Mainz (HKW) until it was renamed at the end of 2016. Mainzer Stadtwerke AG holds two thirds of the shares, Kraftwerke Mainz-Wiesbaden AG the other third, which also takes on operational management.

The MFW operates a heating network of 95 km length, to which around 1000 larger buildings and distributors are connected, as well as a smaller local heating network on the other side of the Rhine in Mainz-Kastel . District heating sales amounted to around 400 GWh in 2018, with a thermal connected load of 243 MW. The grid feed-in amounted to 454 GWh, so the grid losses were around 12%. Mainz district heating currently draws around 2500 customers, mostly larger consumers such as state authorities, the university, the university clinics, the cathedral or the Mainz town hall. generation

The base heat load is supplied by the Mainz waste-to-energy plant operated by the Entsorgungsgesellschaft Mainz mbH (EGM) on the Ingelheimer Aue in Mainz. The generation of district heating at medium load is done by the gas and steam power plant (electrical output 400 MW) and the CHP (10 * 10 MW engines) of Kraftwerke Mainz-Wiesbaden AG (KMW). A district heating storage system (750 MWh) is used to make the electrical power plant output more flexible, regardless of the heat load. For peak and reserve loads, MFW operates three heating plants of its own (Bauerngasse, Universität and Mainz-Kastel: a total of 165 MW) in the urban area, which provide 9% of the heat, the remaining 91% come from the CHP plants on Ingelheimer Aue based. In addition, the company has been using an electric boiler ( power-to-heat ) with 20 MW in the balancing energy market since May 2013 .
