Mainz waste incineration plant

The Entsorgungsgesellschaft Mainz mbH (EGM) was founded on March 12, 1999. It operates the Mainz waste-to-energy plant (MHKW) on Ingelheimer Aue in Mainz . The plant on the grounds of Kraftwerke Mainz-Wiesbaden AG went into operation in 2003 with two incinerators and was expanded to include an incineration line in 2009. KMW AG is the largest EGM shareholder with 50.1 percent of the shares.

The capacity of the Mainz waste-to-energy plant is around 350,000 tons of waste per year. Household waste and commercial waste similar to household waste are incinerated here - including municipal waste from Mainz, the Mainz-Bingen district and the Donnersberg district . The remaining amounts of waste are supplied by the second EGM shareholder, Remondis Region Südwest GmbH. According to the articles of association, the city of Mainz has special rights to the EGM.

With the waste-to-energy plant, EGM takes care of the waste disposal of a region with around 500,000 inhabitants. Due to the long-term disposal contracts, the economically necessary utilization is ensured.

In total, more than 4 million tonnes of household waste and commercial waste similar to household waste have been incinerated in Mainz since the waste-to-energy plant in Mainz went into operation in 2004. This corresponds to the weight of around 100 million gray household garbage cans, which are found at the door of most households. The Mainz plant has a very high level of technical availability.

The heat generated when the waste is burned is not only used to generate electricity in a 20 MW steam turbine and to generate electricity in the neighboring KMW gas power plant. The waste-to-energy plant also generates a large part of Mainz's district heating . District heating is used to heat the Mainz Cathedral , most of the ministries in the city, the underfloor heating in the Opel Arena and the medical school at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, and provide warm water. The district heating is delivered via Mainzer Fernwärme GmbH.
