In September 2004, founded in 1934 took over Rethmann AG & Co. KG the RWE Umwelt AG , Viersen (previously the Trienekens AG took over, Viersen) to 100%. This transaction was approved by the Federal Cartel Office on February 23, 2005 with certain conditions. These stated that around 30% of RWE Umwelt AG's business volume had to be resold. The two companies were subsequently merged , and at the same time the company name was changed across the board (including all investments) to "Remondis".

In August 2006, Remondis took over 60% of TSR Recycling , together with Cronimet Holding GmbH (20%) and Alfa Acciai SpA (20%) , which is Europe's leading recycling company for steel scrap and non-ferrous metals. In 2007 Remondis expanded in the field of waste disposal and recycling in Eastern Europe. In Poland , Remondis is the market leader in private recycling services. In August 2007, founded Remondis with the industrial city of Zaporizhia and the company OLF Ltd , the largest public-private partnership (PPP) in the Ukraine .

In July 2012, the Australian subsidiary Remondis Australia took over Thiess Waste Management Services , a provider of waste disposal and recycling services in Australia. Thiess Waste Management was a division of Thiess Services , founded in 1987 , a subsidiary of Leighton Holdings . Thiess Waste Management operates today (2014) under Remondis Australia and operates transshipment stations, recycling and waste treatment plants as well as landfills in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. At the time of the takeover, Thiess Waste Management had a turnover of 230 million AUD with around 600 employees.

In 2014 Remondis changed the legal form from "AG & Co. KG" to " SE & Co. KG".

The initiative for the privatization of waste management in Germany since the 1980s is a decade since the beginning of incipient tendency to remunicipalisation contrary. This trend is assessed differently by the various municipal and private market participants. Remondis continues as the largest private-sector recycling companies in Germany together with the Federal Association of the German Waste, Water and Raw Materials Management Association (BDE) for competition between local authorities and the private sector to - from an entrepreneurial perspective - same conditions. The company operates in Europe as part of public-private partnerships with around 100 local joint investment companies .

In September 2018, Remondis announced the takeover of the Duales System Deutschland group (Der Grüne Punkt). The Bundeskartellamt announced in April 2019 that it viewed the merger project as critical.
