The CRONIMET Holding GmbH (proper spelling: CRONIMET ) is a company for metal recycling and trading. The company is headquartered in Karlsruhe and together with Cronimet Mining AG forms the Cronimet Group. The core business consists of the recycling of stainless steel and trading in ferro-alloys and primary metals.
history
1980s
In 1980, Günter Pilarsky founded Cronimet . At first, the scrap trade at that time consisted of only two companies in Karlsruhe and Düsseldorf . After just two years, Cronimet opened up the Dutch market and opened its first foreign subsidiary, CRONIFER Holland BV (today: Cronimet Holland BV). In the 1980s, the company began to focus on purchasing towards Eastern Europe , and shortly after the fall of the Wall in 1990, the amount purchased from this region was already 30 percent of the total volume. After the fall of the Wall, Cronimet profited greatly from scrap purchases in Russia and the former Soviet republics.
1990s
In the following years, further German and European branches were established. In 1995, Cronimet decided to enter the African market and acquired a British subsidiary there. In 1996, Cronimet formed a joint venture with the Plant of Pure Iron plant to produce ferro-molybdenum and molybdenum metals. In 1991, Cronimet expanded by increasingly trading in primary metals and special alloys. With the founding of the Cronimet Corporation in the United States in 1997, the first major branch abroad followed, which was supplemented from 1998 by several investments in US companies. In addition to the American company, Cronimet also opened another overseas company in 1999, Cronimet Brazil Ltda. in Sao Paulo.
2000s
In parallel to its global expansion, the company also opened other European locations, e.g. B. in Italy, Poland and Switzerland. Over the years, Cronimet continuously acquired shares in the Plant of Pure Iron, so that the company had a majority of 51% in 2004. In the course of this, Günter Pilarsky founded Cronimet Mining GmbH in the same year. This strategic step enabled a supplementary supply of the stainless steel producing industry with primary raw materials. In addition, in 2004 Cronimet Mining acquired a majority stake in Zangezur Copper Molybdenum Combine CJSC (ZCMC) and thus supports the primary raw material supply of Cronimet Holding. Local companies were also taken over, as in the case of Contur in Poland , which was renamed Cronileg Poland .
Expansion into new markets continued to be a priority with the opening of a representative office in Shanghai in 2005. Cronimet Holding GmbH also took over twenty percent of the shares in TSR Recycling in 2006 (sold again in 2014). With the acquisition of Metalloy Metalle Legierungen GmbH in Norderstedt, Cronimet expanded its portfolio to include special and super alloys. The founder Pilarsky founded the Jocelyn & Günter Pilarsky Foundation in Karlsruhe with his partner in 2006 , which has a social purpose.
2010s
In 2010 the group already comprised 50 branches and investments in Europe, America, Asia and Africa. In the same year, 60 percent of MSP Metall Service Pedack GmbH was acquired and the joint ventures Cronimet Ostrava, sro and TSR Inowroclaw Spolka were founded. At the same time, the first warehouse in Baoshan / Shanghai was put into operation in China in March to meet the demand there. A year later, Cronimet continued to expand in Asia with the establishment of Cronimet Singapore Ltd.
In 2013, Cronimet opened up a new business area with the acquisition of a minority stake in DESTIMET Green Services GmbH. DESTIMET Green Services is a company that processes and recycles industrial sludge with a patented technology. Cronimet has been the sole owner of DESTIMET since 2015 and renamed the company to Cronimet Envirotec GmbH in 2017. Another new business area was opened up with the successful audit by the Aircraft Fleet Recycling Association (AFRA), which recycles aircraft turbines.
In 2018, Cronimet expanded to South Korea to process historical tungsten heaps. With the establishment of Cronimet Australia Pty Ltd, Cronimet opened up a new continent and is now represented on six continents.
Companies
Cronimet is divided into four business areas: Trade & Sales, Recycling, Production and Services. The offer ranges from products such as pure metals and ferro alloys for primary raw materials to processed stainless steel and metal scrap to special and super alloys. These are offered in pure form or combined in special mixtures. According to its own information, Cronimet guarantees its customers percent-accurate analyzes of all raw materials. Cronimet is active in all business areas both as a supplier and as a buyer.
Divisions
recycling
Cronimet lets its employees in the field of recycling also act as consultants in order to determine the exact classification and calculation of the recyclable materials offered. The business model is based on the company's global presence in order to be able to deliver even in the event of bottlenecks and not to be too dependent on the volatile raw materials market in terms of performance.
Trade and distribution
The company trades 1.2 million tons of recyclable materials annually. The company advertises with a special focus on delivery to the day. Cronimet has supply contracts with steel mills and alloy producers around the world, which is why it tries to maximize security of supply. Cronimet is the exclusive distributor of ferro-niobium from Brazil and ferro-nickel from Indonesia. Business partners in the field of trade and sales include large stainless steel producers, but also small, specialized foundries and the vacuum melting industry. Customers from the chemical industry, medical and electrical engineering are also customers.
production
In the 1990s, the extraction of primary raw materials became another mainstay for Cronimet, especially since 2005 when the company acquired the majority in the Sangesurer copper and molybdenum combine , one of the largest copper and molybdenum mines in Armenia. In the meantime, the ore production has increased to twelve million tons per year . The company became one of the largest private employers in Armenia with over 3000 employees.
Services
An independent company in the form of Cronimet Services was founded for the services offered. This area advises customers on recycling processes or organizational issues. Cronimet, for example, takes over the complete logistics of its customers if necessary by offering temporary storage (storage buffer function), but also permanent external storage and planning and handling the delivery of raw materials. As a result, business partners can do without space and staff-intensive storage.

In 2006 Günter Pilarsky founded the Pilarsky Foundation, which supports social projects in Armenia and the Philippines. The foundation's primary purpose is to advance education, research, and support public health and welfare. The company also founded the CRONIMET Charity Foundation Armenia. This non-profit corporation aims to improve public well-being and is particularly focused on children and young people. Important goals are the promotion of research, education, development and innovation.
criticism
In February 2011, the ARD business magazine Plusminus reported on inhumane working conditions in a mine in the Congo, from which Cronimet purchases ores. The managing director of CRONIMET Mining, Thomas Heil, rejected the allegations against the SWR with the reference that he assumed that the "partners and subsidiaries" observed the promised "ethical standards in purchasing".
