The Rock and Pillar Range is a rocky clod mountain range on the eastern edge of central Otago on the South Island of New Zealand .

geography

The Rock and Pillar Range, flanked on both sides by the Taieri River , run in a south-westerly direction and merge into the Lammermoor Range at the southern end . The distance to the Pacific Ocean is 53 km. The eastern side of the mountain range climbs moderately steeply and is buoyant by the Hyde Fault , which runs directly between the Taieri River and the foot of the mountains . In contrast, the western side slopes gently down to the upper reaches of the Taieri River. On the crest of the Rock and Pillar Range extends an unusually large plateau 23 km long and 6 km wide, which is 1,450 meters at its highest point.

nature and landscape

Groups of rocks in column and block shapes, so-called Tors ( Welsh ), characterize large parts of the mountain range. Even from a distance you can see the towering rocks on the ridge. Most famous formations were referred to here as Stonehenge and Castle Rock .

Rocky landscape with tussock grass

The vegetation is typical compared to an alpine landscape. The tops of the mountains are covered with snow for a long time, which can suddenly appear in summer when the temperature drops. Primarily the resilient tussock grows . Remains of forest with Broadleaf and Totara (Podocarpus totara) can be found in the valley cuts on the east side. In the higher regions there are robust herbal plants, with Celmisia Viscosa , also known as the Snow Mountain Daisy , dominating here.

use

The Rock and Pillar Range serves scientists of the University of Otago for more than 40 years as a field of research in the disciplines of Botany and Zoology . An already densely installed measuring system and the proximity to the university in Dunedin make the mountain landscape a popular destination for excursions for students as well .
