The Mainzer public transport company (MVG) Ltd. is a spun-off in January 2001, wholly owned subsidiary of the Mainz Stadtwerke AG. As an integrated transport company, it is the owner of the concession for local public transport in the Rhineland-Palatinate state capital Mainz . In the former districts on the right bank of the Rhine , which today belong to the Hessian state capital Wiesbaden and in some neighboring communities in the districts of Groß-Gerau and Mainz-Bingen, there are joint concessions with other transport companies; in the Hessian area, the requirements of the local public transport companies must also be observed.

Since November 2017, the company has been operating under the Mainzer Mobility brand , but without changing the company name, so it is still formally the Mainzer Verkehrsgesellschaft mbH. It carries over 180,000 passengers on working days and more than 51 million a year.

History of local transport in Mainz

Local public transport in Mainz has a long tradition. From the horse-drawn tram from 1883 to the steam train to today's modes of transport, the omnibus and tram , the streets of Mainz have already seen a number of modes of transport. In the bus sector there was even two decades of so-called trolley buses (trolley buses) with electric drive. In its greatest expansion, the tram network had a route length of 39 km in 1927. Today it's 29.7 km. The bus now carries the main load with around 80% of the passengers. It has thus overtaken the tram as the number one mode of transport since the 1950s. With the construction of the Mainzelbahn, this will change again in favor of the tram. Since April 2012, the bicycle has been added as a third branch of the business under the product name " MVGmeinRad ", which has now been spun off into a subsidiary, MVGmeinRad GmbH.

Verkehrsverbund Mainz-Wiesbaden and cooperation with RMV and RNN

The Mainzer Verkehrsgesellschaft and the ESWE Verkehrsgesellschaft operate under the umbrella of the Mainz-Wiesbaden transport association (VMW). The VMW has existed since 1974 and supports the close transport links between the two state capitals. To this end, the two companies have had joint bus routes for many years, which connect Mainz and Wiesbaden in addition to rail connections and the S-Bahn .

The city of Mainz as the indirect owner of the Mainzer Verkehrsgesellschaft is, due to its location with the traffic area in the states of Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse, neither a full member of the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV) nor of the Rhineland-Palatinate Rhein-Nahe-Nahverkehrsverbund (RNN) . The VMW has a cooperation agreement with both associations. A separate RMV price level applies within the VMW. The RNN tariff only applies to traffic between the VMW area and the RNN network area. Since December 2002, a total of five city-surrounding-areas have been introduced as joint routes with the transport company Omnibusverkehr Rhein-Nahe (ORN) to improve traffic connections with the Rhine-Hesse region .

Restructuring of the line network

2000

With the timetable change on May 28, 2000, the route network was fundamentally changed. With the aim of optimizing local public transport in Mainz and the associated savings in operating costs, the branches of the line were reorganized. At the same time, the line numbers were also changed, as these had to be rearranged within the VMW under pressure from RMV and RNN. The number range 50 to 99 was assigned for Mainz. The number range 1 to 49 went to Wiesbaden. The exceptions include the shared lines with ESWE Verkehr: 6, 9, 28, 33 and, after the lines were later extended to Mainz city area, now also lines 45 and 47.

As a result of the optimization, a uniform cycle was also introduced on working days. This resulted in considerable cuts in the timetable. Despite protests from the population, most of the changes have been maintained to this day. By bundling lines z. B. 62 and 63 results in a cycle of 10 or 15 minutes on important, shared routes within the urban area, the basic network largely consists of the even line numbers. The daily lines, i.e. H. all uneven line numbers (e.g. 63) are accordingly increasing, usually only until 8 p.m. every 20 or 30 minutes.

2016

Due to the reopening of the Mainzelbahn route, the timetable change on December 11, 2016 brought about some fundamental changes in the route network. In order to avoid parallel traffic to the tram lines 51, 53 and 59, which have been running in the direction of the university, Bretzenheim and Lerchenberg since then, the line branches were reorganized and the bus lines 58, 69 and 79, which were wholly or partly of other bus routes. In the course of the timetable change, the joint lines 45 and 47 operated jointly with ESWE Verkehr were also discontinued on the Mainz side and partially or completely replaced by lines 76 and 78, since since the closure of the Schiersteiner Bridge on February 10, 2015, a joint bus operation between ESWE Traffic and Mainz mobility over the Schiersteiner Bridge was no longer possible.

2020

Under the title “Timetable 2020”, the route network was again significantly changed for the timetable change in December. At the same time, the basic cycle of the lines was fixed at a half-hourly cycle. This resulted, especially in the areas that are only served by one line, in some cases considerable restriction of the transport services offered, while the advertised improvements actually only occurred on a relatively small number of route sections. In Kostheim in particular, the line change led to clear protests.

Outsourcing

In the context of the legal requirements, the pressure has increased in recent years to reduce the traditional deficits in local public transport. For this purpose, MVG has founded the two subsidiaries City-Bus Mainz GmbH (CBM) and Mainzer Verkehrs-Service GmbH (MVS), where other collective agreements apply, which has a lasting effect on personnel costs. The CBM provides a large part of the driving staff, while the MVS mainly deals with ticket inspection. The Mainzer Verkehrsgesellschaft itself only hires new employees in the areas of administration and workshops.

On January 1, 2018, the CBM was integrated into the MVG.

Holdings

Mainzer Verkehrsgesellschaft holds a 2.53% stake in VDV eTicket Service GmbH & Co. KG (Cologne). In addition, MVG has a 100% stake in MVGmeinRad GmbH and 50% in Verkehrs-Verbund Mainz-Wiesbaden GmbH (VMW).

The tram fleet consists of:

In addition, the MVG has three historic trams of the types:

  • 2 × ZR Tw
  • 3 × ZR Tw
  • 6 × ZR GTw

In 2009, nine were Vario tracks in equipment layout at Stadler Rail ordered, the first of which arrived for testing in Mainz already on 20. September 2011. The first new trams have been in regular service since spring 2012.

In July 2012, the Supervisory Board of Stadtwerke Mainz AG decided in spring 2013, and not as planned in 2014, to purchase 34 new buses that meet the EEV / Euro 5 emissions standard . The 34 vehicles are divided into 28 articulated and six solo buses. They replace vehicles that only met the Euro 2 emissions standard, some of which were 16 years old and had a mileage of over 1,000,000 km. The reason for the early procurement was the introduction of the common environmental zone of the cities of Mainz and Wiesbaden on February 1, 2013.

In December 2018, 23 new Euro 6 Citaro articulated buses were purchased. These have 16 USB connections and a wide rear indicator that shows the line and the destination.

Except for the new Variobahn trams and the latest Citaro buses, the passenger area of the vehicles has no air conditioning.

In addition, Mainz Mobility procured 4 Sileo S18 battery buses .

Self-promotion

The Mainz transport company advertised itself until November 26, 2017 via the popular "Mobilixx", which symbolized a bus. With the introduction of the “Mainz Mobility” brand, the Mobilixx was removed and has now been retired. Since then, self-promotion has been carried out using the “M”, which is also used by the Mainz municipal utilities, and the slogan “MAINZIGARTIG MOBIL”. Either tickets or Mainz mobility itself are advertised with slogans.
