Graham Colin Swift (born May 4, 1949 in London ) is a British writer .

Life and work

Swift attended Dulwich College in London , Queens' College in Cambridge and the University of York and then worked as a teacher.

He became known through his award-winning novel Wasserland . He writes short stories and novels and, according to various critics, including the columnist Thomas David, is one of the most important storytellers in contemporary British literature. His work has received several awards. The central theme of his books is the function of memory. He developed it on the basis of characters from recent English history by linking personal fates with world history. A special stylistic device is the achronological narrative technique - the postponed, fragmented narration of subsequent stories - and the use of an unreliable narrator .

Several of his works have been filmed with top-class cast: 1. his novel Shuttlecock 1991 by Andrew Piddington with Alan Bates , Lambert Wilson and Kenneth Haigh; 2. his novel Waterland 1992 with Jeremy Irons (see Waterland ); 3. the novel Ever after 2001 by Fred Schepisi with Michael Caine , Bob Hoskins and Helen Mirren .

His novel Mothering Sunday , published in 2016 , which was published in 2017 in the German translation by Susanne Höbel under the title Ein Festtag , has been translated into more than 20 languages. The novel immediately became an international bestseller and received the renowned Hawthornden Prize in 2017 .
