Last round

Last round ( Last Orders ) is an award-winning novel by British author Graham Swift . He was awarded the Booker Prize in 1996.

The protagonists are three old men, Roy, Vic and Lenny, who go to the sea to grant their deceased friend, Jack, his last wish to throw his ashes into the sea on Margate Beach . The storyline is repeatedly interrupted by flashbacks in which the three men or Vince, Jack's adopted son, tell scenes from life in the first person.

In 1997 there were allegations of plagiarism regarding this narrative style. The English scholar John Frow accused Swift of copying the structure and plot of William Faulkner's novel When I Was Dying in Last Round without pointing it out. A few weeks later, these allegations were picked up on the front page of the Independent on Sunday , sparking prolonged debate in several newspapers. Well-known authors such as Salman Rushdie and Julian Barnes took Swift into defense against the allegations and argued that Final Round was clearly an homage to Faulkner.

It was praised how the author succeeds in bringing to light little stories from everyday life, wishes, hopes and failed relationships, always combined with a pinch of humor that sometimes takes on quirky and slightly macabre traits.

The novel was filmed in 2001 under the direction of Fred Schepisi with Michael Caine , Tom Courtenay , Emma Deigman , David Hemmings , Bob Hoskins , Helen Mirren and Ray Winstone .
