Sermon price
The ecumenical sermon award is a speech award given annually by the publishing house for the German economy since 2000. After Norman Rentrop's son Richard took over as CEO of the publishing house in 2018, the publisher realigned sponsorship activities and discontinued support. Since then, the Evangelical Theological Faculty of the University of Bonn has organized the award itself.
Framework
The award ceremony takes place on the Day of Repentance and Prayer in the Castle Church of the University of Bonn. The sermon award is a non-endowed award. The winners will receive a bronze sculpture made by the artist Fred Gerz . In addition to the prizes for life's work and for the best sermon, a special prize has been awarded every year since 2001. The prize for the best wedding sermon was awarded for the first time in 2017.
Goal setting
The prize is awarded for German-language sermons that make an excellent contribution to the speech culture in churches and church institutions and a. convince through their theological content, their biblical foundation, their closeness to experience and their credibility. The prize is expressly open from all Christian churches and ecclesiastical communities that are affiliated to the Working Group of Christian Churches in Germany as members and as guest members. The sermons should contribute to ethical orientation and spiritual practice and serve the dialogue between church, society and economy. With it, the important role of the rhetoric in the churches dependent on personal communication should be brought more into the church and public awareness.
