Ulrich Engel (theologian)

Ulrich Engel OP (born June 4, 1961 in Düsseldorf ) is a German theologian , priest and university professor .

Life

Ulrich Engel completed his school education with the Abitur in 1980 and then did two years of community service, after which he began studying Catholic theology at the University of Münster . After two years of study, he joined the Dominican Order in 1984 , and in 1985 he moved from Münster to the University of Bonn , where he completed his studies in 1988. In the following two years he took his religious vows and was ordained a priest .

In 1991, Engel took over the conceptual planning of the City Pastoral Project "Sankt Andreas - Open Church of the Dominicans" at the Andreas Church in Düsseldorf , on which he worked until 2000. From 1996 he was the student magister of the Dominican order province of Teutonia , which he headed from 2000 to 2008 as the Regens studiorum . He has been editor-in-chief of the Dominican magazine Wort und Antwort since 1996 .

In 1998, Engel received his doctorate from the University of Freiburg im Üechtland with the thesis Bordered Emptiness: on the practice of a political-theological aesthetic following Peter Weiss' trilogy of novels "The Aesthetics of Resistance" as a Doctor theologiae and received teaching positions in philosophy , fundamental theology and philosophical from that year -theological borderline questions at the Philosophical-Theological University of Münster . Since 2001 he has been director of the Dominican "Institut Marie-Dominique Chenu " in Berlin. In the following year he received further teaching positions for systematic theology at the Free University of Berlin , also from 2002 onwards he participates as a member of the German Bishops' Conference (since 2002 specialist committee of the journalistic commission, since 2006 working group “catechesis and mission” of the pastoral commission and from 2007 to 2010 Working Group “Institutes of Consecrated Life” of the Commission for Spiritual Professions and Church Services). Since 2003 he has also been a spiritual adviser to the Catholic Academic Foreigners Service , and from 2005 to 2006 he prepared the 96th German Catholic Day in the “Justice” working group of the Central Committee of German Catholics .

Engel received his habilitation at the Philosophical-Theological University of Benediktbeuern in 2006, where he became a private lecturer in fundamental theology in the same year . Further teaching positions followed at the University of Potsdam ( lifestyle, ethics and religious studies since 2007), the University of Münster (theology since 2008) and the Pontifical University of Salamanca (fundamental theology since 2008), and from 2009 to 2011 Engel was also a deputy chair for dogmatics and the history of dogma of the University of Münster. He is Vice-Rector at the Philosophical-Theological University (PTH) of the Capuchins in Münster, where he teaches philosophy in the field of philosophical-theological borderline questions.

Engel has been a member of the editorial board of the Freiburg Journal for Philosophy and Theology since 2006, a member of the Presidium of the Guardini Foundation since 2008 and advisory board member of the Sciencia Tomista magazine since 2010 . For the Ecumenical Church Congress 2010 he was a member of the project commission “How to live faith? What to argue about in faith? Where do you experience faith? "
