biography

Vattimo studied literature and philosophy in Turin from 1954 to 1959 with Luigi Pareyson , whose chair he later took over. He received his doctorate in 1961 on Aristotle ( Il concetto di fare in Aristotele ), followed by his habilitation in 1963 on the subject of Essere, storia e linguaggio in Heidegger . After a research grant in Heidelberg, where he studied with Karl Löwith and Hans-Georg Gadamer , he became professor of aesthetics at the University of Turin in 1964 . In 1982 he took over the chair for theoretical philosophy . In the 1970s and 80s he was also visiting professor at various universities in the USA.

Gianni Vattimo campaigns for the rights of same-sex partnerships. He is homosexual and describes himself as a Catholic, but according to an interview he does not believe in God.

In 1992 Vattimo received the Max Planck Research Award together with Wolfgang Welsch . In 2000 he was a fellow of the Friedrich Nietzsche College . In 2002 he was awarded the Hannah Arendt Prize for Political Thought.

From 1999 to 2004 he was a left-wing democratic member of the European Parliament . In 2009 Vattimo ran for Antonio Di Pietros Italia dei Valori in the North-West constituency and reached fourth place with 14,951 preferential votes. Since two of the three candidates lying in front of him were also elected in other constituencies and accepted these mandates, Vattimo moved back into the European Parliament.

In autumn 2010 he was visiting professor at the ETH Zurich and gave several lectures on the topic of Italian ideology 1950 - 2000 .

EU parliamentarians

From 2009 to 2014, Vattimo was Deputy Chairman of the delegation to the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly. He was a member of the Committee on Culture and Education and the Delegation for relations with the countries of Central America. As a deputy, Vattimo was in the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs and in the delegation in the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly.

Think

In his numerous works (a catalog raisonné from 2000 lists over 100 books that he has written alone or with others) he deals with hermeneutic ontology and nihilism and speaks in this context of pensiero debole ( weak thinking ). A special focus of his work is dealing with the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche and Martin Heidegger . His thinking is simply based on an anti-metaphysical - a "weak" - reading of these two controversial philosophers. Following on from Heidegger, Vattimo developed a no-longer-metaphysical, i.e. H. a "weak" concept of being. He also translated several works by Heidegger into Italian, but above all he translated Hans-Georg Gadamer's 'Truth and Method'.

Vattimo also deals with post-structuralism and Jacques Derrida's deconstruction and can therefore be assigned to philosophical postmodernism .

In recent times he has increasingly turned to the thinking of Karl Marx: "While Pier Aldo Rovatti has moved away from Marxism, I have come closer and closer to it."
