Pier Aldo Rovatti

Pier Aldo Rovatti (* 1942 in Modena ) is an Italian philosopher . Together with Gianni Vattimo, he is the main representative of the innovative post-structuralist line of thought of weak thinking ( pensiero debole ), editor of the journal aut aut, founded by Enzo Paci in 1951, and professor emeritus for theoretical philosophy at the University of Trieste . There he also heads the laboratory for contemporary philosophy , in which young academics deal with topics of the time from a philosophical perspective.

Life

Rovatti studied philosophy in Milan, was among the existentialist , phenomenologist and Marxist Enzo Paci and received his doctorate with a thesis on Alfred Whitehead . In 1977 he went to Trieste and worked as an assistant at the philosophical seminar. In 1999 he was appointed associate professor and in 2004 full professor at the University of Trieste .

Rovatti followed the phenomenological-Marxist approach of his teacher Enzo Paci in the 1960s and early 1970s, but began studying Michel Foucault as one of the first philosophers in Italy in the late 1970s . As a result, he broke away from the thinking of early Marx and criticized Marxist determinism. He became known in Italy with his articles in the magazine aut aut . In 1983 he achieved international attention with the publication of the anthology Il pensiero debole ("The weak thinking"), which he edited together with Gianni Vattimo ; Besides Rovatti and Vattimo, the authors also included Umberto Eco and Maurizio Ferraris . In the USA in particular, the new current of thought was well received. Since then, Rovatti's thinking has focused on the weak sides of the subject, especially passivity and alterity. With a new interpretation of Martin Heidegger's work , he has distinguished himself in the academic discourse. Personal and intellectual friendship linked him with Jacques Derrida and Emanuel Levinas, among others . Rovatti is part of the philosophy of post-structuralism .

The first systematic description of his "weak thinking" was made by René Scheu in his dissertation . The work was published in Italian in 2010 and accompanied by a letter from Gianni Vattimo .
