Marie-Dominique Chenu OP (born January 10, 1895 in Soisy-sur-Seine , † February 11, 1990 in Paris ; born Marcel Chenu ) was a French Catholic theologian.

With Yves Congar , Jean Daniélou and Henri de Lubac, Chenu was one of the main exponents of Nouvelle Théologie .

Life

Chenu was from 1920 to 1942 professor for the history of Christian teaching at the religious college Le Saulchoir of the Dominican order province of France (until 1939 in the Belgian Cain near Tournai and then at its new location in Étiolles near Paris ). After his book Une école de théologie: Le Saulchoir , in which he published his ideas on the renewal of theology in 1937, was indexed in 1942 , he was banned from teaching at the religious college and was dismissed as rector. Chenu then taught medieval history at the Sorbonne from 1947 and at the Institut Catholique in Paris from 1953 .

In 1930 he founded the Institute for Medieval Studies in Ottawa with Étienne Gilson . Also because of his commitment to the worker priests he had to suffer sanctions from the Vatican in 1954 and then lived in Rouen until 1963 .

At the Second Vatican Council , Chenu was an adviser and one of the initiators of the Council's message for the world.

In the LThK, Duval honors him as “sensitive to the new in the teachings of John XXIII. and Paul VI. "And describes him as a vigilant observer" of social processes in the modern world. "

Honorable recognition

The Dominican Association “ESPACES - Spirituality, Cultures and Society in Europe” has been running the M.-Dominique Chenu Institute in Berlin on Schwedter Strasse as a philosophical and theological research center since 2000 , where it publishes, among other things, writings by and in the Collection Chenu series about Chenu out. In 2004, Chenu was posthumously awarded an honorary doctorate from the Theological Faculty of the University of Tübingen after he had rejected it in the 1940s so that the Tübingen faculty should not have any problems with the Vatican.
