Jean Guenolé Marie Cardinal Daniélou SJ (born May 14, 1905 in Neuilly-sur-Seine , France , † May 20, 1974 in Paris ) was a Catholic theologian, Jesuit priest and cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

His father was the Breton politician Charles Daniélou and his mother was Madeleine Clamorgan, founder of a Christian educational organization for teachers. One of his brothers was the musicologist and author Alain Daniélou .

Jean Daniélou entered the Jesuit order in 1929 and received his education in Laval, Jersey and Paris. In 1938 he received the sacrament of ordination . After further studies, he lectured at the Jesuit school in Poitiers from 1940 and at the Catholic Institute in Paris from 1943, where he was the dean of the Catholic faculty from 1963 to 1969 . In addition, he looked after the students pastoral care. From 1962 to 1965 he participated as an expert at the Second Vatican Council . On April 11, 1969, Pope Paul VI appointed him . the Titular Archbishop of Tauromenium . He received the episcopal ordination on April 19, 1969 by the Parisian Archbishop François Marty ; Co-consecrators were the Paris auxiliary bishops Julien Gouet and Daniel Pézeril . On April 28, 1969 Paul VI took him. as cardinal deacon with the titular church of San Saba in the College of Cardinals .

In 1972 Jean Daniélou was accepted into the Académie française and the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei . Still active in the pastoral care of the “slums” of Paris, he also tried to provide pastoral care to prostitutes. He died on May 20, 1974 of a heart attack in the stairwell of a Paris brothel , which he visited in the course of his pastoral work, and was buried in the Jesuit crypt of the cemetery in Vaugirard in Paris.

Act

Daniélou, along with Yves Congar and Henri de Lubac, are considered to be the pioneers of the nouvelle théologie , which between 1940 and 1950 looked at contemporary philosophy in the context of the doctrine of the faith, worked on the problem of immutability and the historicity of truth, and determined the relationship between nature and grace wanted and again theologically brought up the topics of Marxism , non-Christian religions and the knowledge of God. With this, topics of the Second Vatican Council had been planned and entered the theological discussion.
